The 2025 US Open Recap

Oakmont, Pennsylvania – J.J. Spaun outlasts the grueling US Open test at Oakmont Country Club for his first major victory as the 2025 US Open Champion.  Despite a rain delayed final round, Spaun kept his focus to birdie his final two holes in clutch fashion for a one shot victory over Robert MacIntyre.

This week’s US Open was all about the course.  Oakmont Country Club has hosted over a dozen USGA  championships but possibly none of them with as much deep, penal rough as we saw this week.  The best players in the world had to hack it out when they hit it offline, which was almost a guaranteed penalty stroke.  This led to a lot of high scores and ultimately a championship that held a shocking seven over par cut line.

The low round of the entire week was carded by the T7 finisher Sam Burns who posted a 66 on Friday.  Despite having the lead throughout the final round, his fourth round was derailed by a series of double bogeys on the back nine, leading to an eight over par 78.  2013 Masters Champion Adam Scott also had one of the lowest rounds of the week on Saturday, shooting a 67 and boosting him up the leaderboard for a spot in the final pairing.  His fortune turned quickly in the final round as he posted a nine over par 79 to finish in a tie for 12th place.

To win the US Open, you certainly don’t need a low score to give yourself a chance on Sunday, especially at Oakmont.  You just needed to be consistent and around par everyday, which is exactly what Viktor Hovland did.  His rounds of 68, 70, 71, and 73 were good enough for a solo third finish.  Scottish golfer Robert MacIntyre also made himself known with consistent, steady golf with a back door solo second finish resulting from his great play coming down the stretch on Sunday.  Robert played holes seven through 18 in three under par without a single bogey on the card.  That was impressive and almost won him a major.

However, it was all about J.J. Spaun who started off his week posting a 66, the second lowest round of the entire tournament.  Although by Sunday, he had lost the lead, he responded by finishing strong.  It was a wild finish as Spaun drove the 17th green to setup a two putt birdie and then drained an absolute bomb of a putt on his 72nd hole to secure his first major championship victory.  This is only Spaun’s second win on the PGA Tour but boy was it a special one.

Next week, the PGA returns to Cromwell, Connecticut for the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands with the final major in The Open just around the corner in mid-July.
