The 2024 Wells Fargo Championship

Charlotte, NC – Rory McIlroy has won the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.  This marks his second win this year, and his 26th career PGA Tour win.  McIlroy earned $3.6 million and enough points to leapfrog into fourth place on the FedEx Cup standings along with the trophy and title.

This victory wasn’t a shock to those of us paying attention it marks back-to-back wins for McIlroy.  After all, he won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Shane Lowry in his last start.  It also makes sense he’d continue his stellar play because he has a history of success at this specific tournament, winning it four times: 2010, 2015, 2021, and now in 2024.  In an interview following the final round, he said it was one of his favorite stops of the year.

McIlroy has consistently been one of the longest and straightest drivers of the golf ball, but every aspect of his game was on point today.  He drained many putts at length.  He chipped in from a bunker.  Even with a disappointing double bogey finish on the final hole, he still shot the low round of the day of 65 and won the tournament with a total score of 17 under par.

The only other player that had a true chance to win was Xander Schauffle.  He’d started the final round leading McIlroy by a stroke.  After holing out for an eagle in the final round, it looked like he would be the one to win.  However, after McIlroy went on a run of eight under par in eight holes, Schauffle couldn’t keep up.  He would finish in solo second with a score of 12-under par.

The next tournament on schedule is the year’s second major tournament, the PGA Championship which will be held at Valhalla Golf Club.  There, the best players in the world will look to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy.  Scottie Scheffler will look to continue his dominant season and go for a second major championship in a row.  Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka, last year’s PGA Championship winner, will look to defend his title and McIlroy will look to maintain his newly found form.
