The 2024 John Deere Classic Recap

Silvis, Illinois – Setting a new scoring record for tournament play on the PGA Tour, Davis Thompson laps the field at the John Deere Classic.  The winner’s score on TPC Deere Run has always been quite low but Thompson’s score of 28 under par breaks the record as the first time PGA Tour winner runs away with it.

It wasn’t all that easy for Davis Thompson though.  Another PGA Tour rookie Hayden Springer made headlines right out of the gates posting a magical 59 in round one and leading the field by two strokes.  Hayden backed it up with several solid rounds to manage a T7 finish for the week.  Former John Deere Classic winner Jordan Spieth who made his inaugural win here, jumped up the leaderboard after his third round 63 which he followed up with a final round of 70.

Popular X personality Michael Kim missed the cut this week along with YouTube star Wesley Bryan.  Although these players want to do well and gain FedEx points, this week is especially important to try to get a last minute bid to The Open which is just two weeks away.  Davis Thompson did just that with his win today.  Although he started with a nervy two shot lead, he shot a ghastly 29 on the front nine, birdieing six of his first nine holes.  Davis managed two more birdies on the back nine to just one bogey but it was enough to clear a four shot lead going into his 72nd hole.

It was truly just a competition for second place as there were three players to finish at 24 under par.  Those three players were 2024 Olympian C.T. Pan, FSU amateur golfer Luke Clanton, and recently turned professional golfer Michael Thorbjornsen.  All three pushed each other to the finish line vying for that second place solo finish shooting 64, 63, and 63, respectively.  Either way, it was all about the first time winner in Davis Thompson who just qualified for The Open and final major of 2024.

Next week, while many players will begin their prep for The Open by playing in the Scottish Open, the PGA Tour heads to Keene Trace in Kentucky for the ISCO Championship.
