The 2023 Genesis Invitational Recap

Pacific Palisades, LA – Jon Rahm has won the 2023 Genesis Invitational.  With this win, he reclaims his number-one world ranking, making it the fifth time in his career he’s held that distinction.  He also earned a whopping $3.6 million from this single event and over $9.5 million this season alone.

Rahm has become a true force to be reckoned with.  This tournament marked the third PGA Tour win he’s earned since the beginning of January along with his titles from The American Express and the Sentry Tournament of Champions.  That’s despite facing fierce competition from Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler who have also held the title of the world number one golfer this season.

While Rahm looked confident throughout the week, Max Homa was a threat to Rahm’s third win this season.  In fact, despite starting the day 3 strokes behind, wound up leading the tournament for a brief stretch.  While ultimately he would falter, Homa nearly won his second event in 2023, finishing in solo second at 15-under-par.

Another player that couldn’t help but generate headlines was Tiger Woods.  Not only was he this tournament’s host, but it became the first PGA Tour event he played in over 800 days.  While he didn’t win, he showed flashes of brilliance with a 67 on Saturday.  Ultimately he would finish tied for 45th with a score of 1-under for the tournament.

Next week the pros will be traveling to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  There in the sunshine state, the first Austrian-born PGA event winner, Sepp Straka, will look to defend his title at The Honda Classic.  After back-to-back elevated events though, the field will be noticeably weaker.  Despite that, several highly-ranked players have committed to playing, including Sungjae Im, Shane Lowry, and Billy Horschel.
