2024 Memorial Tournament Recap

Scottie Scheffler Victorious at Memorial

Murifield Village, OH – Scottie Scheffler (-8) won the 2024 Memorial Tournament by a stroke over Collin Morikawa.  It was the fifth victory of the season thus far for the world number one.  Rarely have we seen a golfer so dominant from tee to green.  Despite admitting to still struggling to shake off the off-course events that occurred at Valhalla, Scottie showed his quality and bested an elite field on a tough golf course.

Scheffler looked like he might run away and hide at a few points during the week but ended up shooting 71-74 on the weekend to let other players back into the tournament.  Sunday presented especially tough scoring conditions, with Matt Fitzpatrick shooting the low round of the day with a 69 and vaulting himself up the leaderboard to a T5 finish.

Morikawa continued his fine run of form recently, edging third place finisher Adam Hadwin by three strokes.  The Memorial is always one of the PGA Tour’s signature events, but Jack Nicklaus went on record about his dissatisfaction with the tournament’s place on the new PGA Tour schedule.  Landing a week before the US Open diminishes its apparent significance and Nicklaus stated that he never played the week before a major.

Scheffler will undoubtedly be the heavy favorite at Pinehurst next week.  Other betting favorites include Rory McIlroy, who finished T15 at +2; newly minted major champ Xander Schauffele, who finished T8 at -1; and young gun Ludvig Aberg, who finished T5 at -2.

Other players who had strong finishes included Christiaan Bezuidenhout (solo 4th, -3); Sepp Straka (T5, -2); and Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im (T8, -1).

Next week, the PGA Tour takes the week off as the top players in the world head to Pinehurst No. 2 for the U.S. Open.  The U.S. Open has not been contested at Pinehurst since 2014, when it was won by Martin Kaymer.  Scheffler will be heavy favorite along with those mentioned above.  The field will also include top LIV players Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka.
