2022 World Golf Championships – Dell Technologies Match Play Recap

Austin, Texas – For the second year in a row, Scottie Sheffler advanced to the final round of the WGC Dell Match Play, but this time he hoisted the trophy with his third win in the past six weeks.   The Texas resident and Longhorn product defeated Kevin Kisner in the final match at Austin Country Club as the sun set Sunday afternoon.

The WGC Dell Match play is always a longer than normal week for players.  Pool play begins on Wednesday and if you’re lucky enough to make it to the finals, you could potentially play 36 competition holes on Sunday.  It can be grueling but with $2.1 million on the line for first place, the exhaustion is certainly worth it.  It was a good showing of competition this week as world number one and two, Collin Morikawa and Jon Rahm, both played and advanced to the round of 16 before being eliminated.  The quarter-final matches were highlighted by the match between Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka.  Johnson advanced by defeating Brooks two up but then lost to eventual champion Scottie Sheffler in the semi-finals 3&1.

In the semi-final match between Kevin Kisner and Corey Conners, Kisner only needed two birdies at holes 2 and 18 to secure his spot in the final match, despite Conners conceding the birdie at the last.    The semi-final match between Scottie Sheffler and Dustin Johnson saw a lot more birdies.  There were ten birdies between the two of them but it was Sheffler who took advantage to advance to the final match.

In the final championship match, Scottie got off to a hot start with wins at 3 of the first nine holes including birdies at 4 and 6.  He was 3up on Kisner heading to the back.  Kisner wasn’t going down easy as he righted the ship and stayed within striking distance pushing the match deep into the back nine but it wasn’t enough.  The match went to the par-4 15th where Sheffler closed Kisner out with a par, 4&3.

In the consolation match between Dustin Johnson and Corey Conners, Conners took down his opponent 3&1 for third place.

This is Sheffler’s third PGA Tour victory and vaults him to world number one.  Next week the PGA Tour stays in Texas for the 2022 Valero Texas Open.
