Scottsdale, AZ – After quite a few close calls, University of Texas product Scottie Scheffler outlasts 2021 Tour Championship winner Patrick Cantlay to finally claim the title at the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The two dueled through three playoff holes after tying at 16-under par in regulation. The playoff consisted of playing the 18th hole until someone came out in front in a sudden death format. Both players made par the first and second time through. The third time through, however, Scheffler drained a long birdie putt that Cantlay was unable to match.
As the home of arguably the wildest week of PGA Tour golf, this week did not disappoint. There were multiple hole in one’s at the 16th hole which elicited a frenzy of beer tossing and celebration. Sam Ryder and Carlos Ortiz both dropped aces on back to back days. The drama continued as Charley Hoffman criticized the PGA Tour for their rules on ball drops and why guys have considered moving away to the Saudi Golf league.
The wild golf at the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open, however, was not overshadowed. World number one Jon Rahm finished his week with a final round 4-under 67 to jump up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 10th. Last week’s winner Tom Hoge ended his Sunday with a few bogeys to drop to a tie for 14th. The biggest story line prior to Sunday was Sahith Theegala, a rookie on the PGA Tour who led this tournament all three rounds and held at least part of the lead on Sunday up until his tee shot on 17. His tee shot took a bad bounce forward and shot over the green and landed in the water. He bogeyed the hole and missed out on a playoff by one shot. This likely wont be the last time we see the rookie golfer so I would pay attention to the name – Theegala.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Riviera for the 2022 Genesis Open where Max Homa is the defending champion.
