Webb Simpson Wins at Harbour Town
Hilton Head, SC – Golf fans were treated to an exciting final round of golf as many of the game’s top players vied for the win in the second event of the re-shuffled PGA Tour season. In the end, Webb Simpson (-22) came out on top, beating out Abraham Ancer by one stroke and Tyrell Hatton and last week’s winner Daniel Berger by two.
Those four players were far from the only players in contention during a final round that was delayed by weather. Entering the final round there were four players tied for the lead at -15 (Hatton, Ancer, Palmer, Simpson), and 17 players within three strokes. Finishing one stroke back of Hatton and Berger were Sergio Garcia and Joaquin Niemann at -19.
Brooks Koepka had several opportunities to vault himself into the lead but had to settle 7th after turning in a 65. Justin Thomas and Dylan Frittelli were the biggest movers of the day, shooting final rounds of 63 and 62, respectively. Both ended at -17, in a six-way tie for eighth.
Not all of the headlines from the week were positive, however, as reminders of the unique circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic surfaced in multiple ways. Most notably, PGA Tour player Nick Watney tested positive for the disease, becoming the first player to do so. Justin Thomas was also critical of how seriously the community of Hilton Head seemed to be taking the threat of the virus.
Bryson DeChambeau continued to grab viewers’ attention with his bulked-up physique and considerable distance gains but also showed he has not lost the finesse that sees him regularly log top 10 finishes on tour.
After flashing some signs of a comeback during the past two weeks, Jordan Spieth faded after making the cut. Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, and Collin Morikawa were other big names who failed to take advantage of the scorable conditions.
Next week, the PGA Tour will play the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. Chez Reavie is the defending champion there and will tee it up alongside a field that includes the top 7 players in the world.
