Vegas Cashes In At RBC Canadian Open

Jhonnatan Vegas defended his Canadian Open title at Glen Abbey Golf Course in Ontario, Canada over the weekend.  After winning by one stroke last year at Glen Abbey, Vegas needed extra holes to cement his title defense over Charley Hoffman.

Vegas got off to a hot start with an opening round 66, good for one shot behind five players tied for the lead.  On Friday, he followed that up with an opening round 69.  Heading into the weekend, he was three shots behind leader Martin Flores.

Another sub-70 round on moving day set up Vegas for a Sunday charge.  His Saturday 67 was three shots off of the pace set by Charley Hoffman, who grabbed the lead after a Saturday 65.

Vegas came out firing on the front nine of his final round, making the turn with a 5-under 35.  He added two more birdies at the 11th and 13th before making his first bogey of the day at the par-3 15th.  Vegas quickly bounced back with a birdie at the par 5 16th, his last of the day.  Despite a monstrous drive that left him a pitching wedge in on the par-5 18th, he ended his day with a par to set the clubhouse lead at 21-under.  In the final group, Hoffman made a clutch birdie at the 16th, then narrowly missed his eagle putt on the 18th for the victory.  A tap in bogey sent the two back to the 18th tee for a playoff.

On the first playoff hole, both players found fairway bunkers.  Despite clipping the bunker lip, Vegas’s massive 8-iron found the green-side rough, pin high.  He was able to make a fantastic chip, and made a tap in birdie.  After laying up out of the fairway bunker, Hoffman found the greenside bunker, and needed to hole out to continue the playoff.  He was unsuccessful, and Vegas solidified his title defense.

This is Vegas’s third career Tour victory.  He had missed five straight cuts coming into the week, before his win at the RBC Canadian Open.  He will try to take the momentum into the last Major of the year at Quail Hollow.
