Titleist GT1 Fairway Wood Review

50 Words or Less

The Titleist GT1 fairway wood is the most forgiving model in the family.  Can be built in standard or light weight configurations.  Easy launch and excellent top end performance.

Introduction

Filling out Titleist’s GT line of fairway woods is the new GT1.  While 1 has, for the last three generations, indicated the model which is built for maximum forgiveness and lighter weight, the Titleist GT1 fairway wood is more versatile than its predecessors.  Though I don’t fit the mold of a “1 player,” the GT1 fairway wood performed brilliantly for me thanks to some important new updates.  Read on to learn more.

Looks

No OEM has mastered making clubs look as sharp and timeless as Titleist, and the GT1 fairway wood is no exception.  I love pulling this thing out of the bag and removing the headcover.  Despite being almost entirely black, the sole has ample visual interest.  There’s a lot of adjustability, but it blends in rather than calling attention to itself.

At address, the Titleist GT1 fairway wood has a larger footprint than the GT2 or GT3.  The shape is not symmetrical, but it’s well-balanced.  A pronounced toe and sharper angle in from the heel keep the GT1 FW from looking swollen and overly large.  Titleist reports that the face is shallower (I assume than the previous model, the TSR1 FW), but it’s on par with many players fairway woods making it inviting to hit off the tee.

Sound & Feel

Despite being the largest, most forgiving option in the line, the Titleist GT1 fairway wood retains the understated sound that I loved so much in the GT3 fairway wood [review HERE].  There’s a hint of metallic in the tone, but it’s subtle.  The impact sound overall is below average with gentle feedback.  Well struck shots aren’t louder than mishits, but they’re a little more lively – “Thud” with a capital T.

Players who want it will find incredibly precise feedback through their hands.  During my fitting, I had little need of Trackman’s impact location measurement – I knew exactly where the ball met the face.  On center, the feeling is sweet: solid and quick.  The Titleist GT1 fairway wood feels strong behind mishits, too, but the ball doesn’t feel launched to the same degree.

Performance

Much like the GT1 driver [review HERE], the Titleist GT1 fairway wood is known for high launch, maximum forgiveness, and lighter weight.  But also like the driver, the GT1 fairway wood is more versatile than its predecessors.  While an ultra-lightweight configuration is still available for players seeking more club head speed, the GT1 FW can also be built to standard weight for players like me who only want the higher launch and forgiveness.

My Titleist fitter built my GT1 fairway with standard weighting and the same shaft that had worked for me in the GT3 and GT2 [review HERE] fairway woods.  The combination yielded strong results.  On my best swings, the results with the GT1 were equal to those with my GT3 FW.  Said another way, at its best, the GT1 is about as good as any fairway wood I’ve hit.  Titleist rates the GT1 as “High Launch” and “Mid Spin” – the same as the GT3 – and that matches what I saw in my testing.

One thing that separates the Titleist GT1 fairway wood from the others in this family is the increased forgiveness.  The larger footprint and “deepest CF of any GT fairway mdoel” make it very stable and easy to launch.  I got very acceptable results from shots that weren’t struck well – thin, heel, and toe.  All this in a head that doesn’t look remotely super game improvement.

The GT1 fairway wood is also unique in its dual adjustability.  The SureFit hosel is shared with all the other Titleist woods, allowing a total range of 2.25 degrees of independent movement for the loft and lie.  What the GT1 alone has is the fore/aft weighting.  With the heavier weight forward, the ball speed should tick up while the spin drops.  For more forgiveness and higher launch, you can move the heavier weight back.  I found that the GT1 had enough forgiveness that I could play the heavier weight forward without paying a steep price for my mishits.

Conclusion

If you haven’t tried Titleist’s “1” woods in the past, it’s time to start.  The Titleist GT1 fairway wood is a forgiving, easy-to-hit choice for players whether they prefer a light or standard weight build.  On top of the excellent forgiveness, the dual adjustability allows players to tune it to produce almost any ball flight and shot shape.

I have the GT1 5 and 7 wood. I love them both, my 5 wood is my favorite club, it launches high and it is very forgiving. My 7 wood is a work in progress, but when it works it’s great. I also have the GT1 driver and 6 hybrid.

I have the GT1 9 wood and 5 wood. The 9 wood is amazing and I love sticking greens with it from 165-170. It has completely eliminated the need for a 5-6 iron. The GT1 5 wood replaced a gt2 16.5* 4 wood which I just couldn’t hit. I only swing 80-88mph and the 4 wood didn’t offer enough launch/carry for me. The GT1 5W has been amazing and this thing just wants to go straight! I carry it about 185 with around 205 total and this has helped me on those long 2nd shots on par 5’s, as I’m obviously not a long hitter.
