Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 Golf Bag Review

50 Words or Less

The Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 golf bag is a true carry bag for the walking golfer.  Light weight.  Ample storage.  Classic style.  Durable materials and quality construction.

Introduction

Almost forty years ago, Sun Mountain brought golfers the very first stand bag.  Their new Eclipse family celebrates this legacy of innovative golf bags with four models designed for different types of walking golfers.  The Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 is the smallest and lightest of the group, ideal for the golfer committed to carrying their sticks but unwilling to compromise on the quality of their bag.

Looks

Sun Mountain used to be synonymous with the “golf bag as billboard” aesthetic, covering the sides of the bags with giant logos.  With the Eclipse line, however, they’re on trend with the current minimalist style.  A subtle mountain emblem sits on either side of the bag, with slightly more prominent Sun Mountain branding on the back.

Another thing I like about the understated style of the Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 is the absence of labelled features.  While it’s not a deal killer for me, I don’t need every pocket to announce its intended purpose.  The clean design of the Eclipse E-1.5 puts the focus on the interesting textures of the materials and the things you’re carrying in the bag.

The Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 comes in five colorways: Black, Black-Green (seen here), Black-Garnet, Black-Nickel, and Black-Navy.  All of these options are more traditional and staid, but the Black-Nickel does have red on the feet and at the base of the bag for a little extra visual punch.

Features

Despite being a true walking bag, the Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 has ample storage capacity.  On the back of the bag, there’s a ball pocket where you can stash three dozen golf balls pretty easily.  Above that is a velour-lined rangefinder pocket with a magnetic closure.  Something I particularly like about this pocket is the large handle for pulling it open.

On the left side of the bag, you get a medium-sized zipper pocket.  This is a great size for a snack, sunscreen, tees, or a spare glove.  I’m a huge fan of appropriately-sized pockets.  It’s fun to say that your bag has 89 cubic gallons of storage space; it’s not as much fun to dig through all that to find a ball marker.

Atop this zipper pocket is a water bottle pouch that can hold a standard sized bottle.  It’s not insulated like the ones you’ll find on heavier, larger bags, but it’s situated so you can reach it easily while the bag is on your back.

The right side of the bag has a traditional layout with a velour-lined valuables pocket sitting on top of the full-length apparel pocket.  As a walking golfer, I think this assortment of pockets is just about perfect.  It allows you to carry everything you need without tempting you to bring more.  You won’t need to ration tees, but you can’t pile extra junk into the bag round after round.

In addition to the thoughtful array of pockets, the Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 has an umbrella holder, a large towel loop, and two slots for pens or pencils.  A rain hood is also included.

Performance

When I got the Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 out of the box, my reaction bordered on giddy.  Most of the “carry” bags these days are really hybrids, meant for players who ride or push as much as they walk.  The Eclipse E-1.5 is a true carry bag.  It’s ultra light – 3.4 pounds – and it feels lighter.  Even fully loaded, the bag feels agile in a way that hybrid bags don’t.

Part of that agile feeling comes from the excellent backpack straps and thoughtfully placed handles.  The X-Fit Dual Strap System keeps the straps organized and easily adjustable.  While I prefer these padded backpack straps on a stand bag, Sun Mountain does offer a single strap that you can clip in, too.  Three handles on the back of the bag – top, middle, and base – make loading the Eclipse E-1.5 in and out of your car a breeze.

The light weight and agility don’t come at the cost of durability.  The Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 feels sturdy thanks to the Cordura Nylon Ripstop material.  Often thin materials feel flimsy, but this doesn’t.  While the changing seasons have kept me from giving this a ton of on-course time, my expectations are that this will hold up for several years.  I will update this review with any new findings on that front.

Turning to the top, the Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 has a 4-way top that measures 7.5″ across.  This is similar in size to the Eclipse E-2.5, but that bag has a 5-way top [review HERE].  The Eclipse E-3.5 has an 8.25″ top with either a 5-way top or 14 individual dividers [review HERE].  On the Eclipse E-1.5, each of the dividers is full-length.

Above, you can see that this bag will hold a set of 14 clubs.  These clubs all have midsize grips, too.  While it’s not the same as having 14 full-length dividers, it is functional.  If I was going to carry 14 clubs regularly, I would have no issue using this bag if I had standard grips.  I typically carry about 10 clubs with midsize grips, and that works great.

Finally, the Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 features the brand’s internal compression bottom.  This system makes the base hinge to activate the stand rather than having a small “foot.”  I strongly prefer this type of system for both durability and stability.  If I have to nitpick, I would prefer it if this bag stood up a bit taller – I prefer the bag to be closer to vertical for ease of sliding clubs in and out – but this is a matter of taste.  By any objective standard, the stand on the Eclipse E-1.5 is excellent.

Conclusion

The company that created the stand bag is still pushing the category forward with smart design choices and high end materials.  If you’re a walking golfer who wants a bag that’s lightweight but tough, the Sun Mountain Eclipse E-1.5 is an easy choice.

Wow-3.9 lbs. Truly, if you’re walking, the lighter, the better IMHO. Appears to be a good bag for walking as opposed to the legions of stand bags weighing in at over 5 lbs that call themselves carry bags. Haven’t seen or felt the material it is made of myself but I hope it’s not as flimsy looking and feeling as the stuff the original Sun Mtn 2.5 was made of, which I abandoned, even though it weighs only 2.5 lbs! I guess when you’re saving weight, something’s gotta give (they beefed up the material in the 2.5+ at the expense of an additional 0.4 lbs.–maybe this is made of the same stuff).

  2. Matt, good review. I’m a fan of Sun Mountain golf bags and I plan to use the E-1.5 as a replacement for my 2023 2.5+ model, which I consider to be one of their best ever lightweight bags with a 9” diameter and weighing 2.9lbs.
