Sun Day Red Presidio Golf Shoe Review review

Introduction

On a recent PIG staff trip to McLemore Resort in North Georgia, I arrived wearing a Sun Day Red polo that was featured in our monthly Golf Gear We Tested [see it HERE].  Amongst our lively golf-centric discussions that evening, we all concurred that we just don’t see Sun Day Red in pro shops – which seemed odd.  The timing was fortuitous as we strolled into the pro shop at The Highlands [review HERE] the next morning only to find a huge display of logoed Sun Day Red polos.

After a long, wonderful day walking The Keep golf course at McLemore [review HERE] I wasn’t shocked, but still bewildered, to find Sun Day Red’s Presidio spikeless golf shoes in my social media feed.  Was that another case of technology listening in?  Or karma sending me a message?  Either way I had to grab a pair of Presidio and check them out myself.

Looks

The Sun Day Red Presidio golf shoes I tested are from the limited-edition Summer Championship Collection.  The red, white, and blue colorway has a patriotic vibe without being over the top.  The many different materials and finishes of the uppers come together for a cohesive, contemporary look.  I appreciate that branding was kept to a minimum with simple Sun Day Red text on the tongue and midsole, plus a small leaping tiger logo on the heel.

The red, white, and blue colors engulf the outsole of the Sun Day Red Presidio, and I love the way the white and blue appear as random splashes of color.  The red elements designate functional features that I’ll explain in the Performance section below.  The Sun Day Red Presidio golf shoes also come in white/grey, black/white, gray/navy, and white/light blue colorways. Comfort

Frequent PIG readers know that the first thing I like to do with new golf shoes is slip them on without socks to evaluate the interior feel.  I’m glad I did that with the Sun Day Red Presidio.  Overall, the interiors felt luxurious, but there was a rough edge at the left arch that was concerning.  It turned out to be some excess glue that I was able to easily scrape away with a fingernail.  Nonetheless, it was a flaw I would not expect from a prestigious brand.

The shoes felt a bit snug, so I used a thin pair of socks the first couple of outings.  The Sun Day Red Presidio didn’t stretch out like a pair of leather shoes, but they did conform enough to my feet that sock choice became a non-issue.  I went with my normal size 9.5, and the size was a good fit overall.  The lacing system provided ample adjustability for securing the midfoot.   I used the word “system” because I learned a new term – ghillies.  Ghillies are what the two fabric loops at the instep are called.  They allow more freedom of movement during the golf swing at that critical junction.

I found a little wiggle room in the toe box, but also a tad of play at my heels.  Cushioning underfoot was firm and supportive.  Sun Day Red designers did a masterful job making the cut of the Presidio around the outside of the ankles low while keeping the Achilles coverage high.  Plus, the friendly padding around my ankles did more than provide comfort; it also kept debris out.

Performance

Speaking of debris, the sole of the Sun Day Red Presidio is simply excellent at not retaining any.  During my testing I never encountered a clump of grass or small rock stuck in the crevices of the outsole.  Even coming out of wet sand, a simple tap with my wedge on the edge of the shoe was all that was needed to clear any grains.

Traction was also excellent with the Sun Day Red Presidio – really strong for a spikeless golf shoe.  At first glance, the lugs may not convey a message of strong traction, but if you focus on the angularity of each element, both in terms of shape and orientation, the design comes into focus.

While you are looking at the outsole, note the red segments at both the inside of the forefoot and the outside of the heel.  The material of those segments is rigid, like hard plastic, versus the softer, rubber like material of the blue and white areas of the outsole.  Those red locations provide critical stability points for harnessing torsional power in the swing.

The Sun Day Red Presidio provided me with a great combination of mobility and stability.  The flex  across the forefoot made walking feel natural and unrestricted.  Along with those red elements of the outsole, the shoes also feature rigid TPU material at the outside midfoot and around the heel for lateral stability.  I liked the stable feel while building my backswing followed up by the ability to rotate my feet through the hitting zone. Conclusion

As you might expect when Tiger Woods is involved with the design details, the Sun Day Red Presidio are impressive spikeless golf shoes.  And whether it was strictly for aesthetics or the recognition that golfers legs get dirty, I truly appreciate the use of blue around the ankle to keep the shoes looking fresh.  It’s also worth noting that I found the TPU-coated uppers very easy to keep clean with a simple wipe off with a wet towel.  These limited-edition Presidio ring in at $215, which is a hefty price, but on par with other top-shelf brands.
