Introduction

If you’ve followed our reviews of the CODECHAOS franchise over the years, you know I’m a huge fan.  Saying “our” reviews really isn’t fair as I’ve hogged them all.  I haven’t always embraced the look, but the fit and performance have been excellent for my feet and golf swing.  Will the latest model, the adidas CODECHAOS 27, live up to the family heritage?  I put a pair of laced and a pair of BOA to the test to find out.

Looks

With no wrap around outsole, the adidas CODECHAOS 27 might be hard to identify as CODECHAOS from the side.  The one-time distinctive elements were less prominent with the ’25 model [review HERE] but I’m still surprised to see them completely disappear with this iteration.  That said, the zig-zag traction elements on the outsoles are 100% CODECHAOS DNA.

While the thick, white BOOST midsoles are identical between the laced and BOA versions of the CODECHAOS 27, the uppers are uniquely different.  And I’m not talking about the obvious differences in closure methods.  The laced model uppers have an almost textile like appearance.  Three wide blue and yellow stripes let everyone know these are adidas shoes, and I love the small “CODECHAOS” in bright orange.  The laced adidas CODECHOAS 27 is also available in black.

The adidas CODECHAOS 27 BOA look like what Imperial Storm Troopers might wear while golfing on their days off on planet Troon.  The all-white uppers are slick and almost shiny.  Subtle ridges run the length of the shoes, and the side windows take on differing hues based on the light and viewing angle.  These adidas CODECHAOS 27 BOA take the essence of a modern looking golf shoe to a whole new level.  [See Price / Buy]

Comfort

Right out of the box, the adidas CODECHAOS 27 had a snug fit, so I used a pair of thinner socks for my first outing – a full 18.  I was pleased with how the shoes quickly started to adapt to my feet.  By the end of the round I had completely forgotten these were new shoes – and even more importantly, my feet felt good.  I switched to my normal, thicker golf socks for the next round.

I went with my normal size 9.5 and the length and overall fit was excellent.  The interior was free of any rough spots or irritating seams.  Underfoot, the adidas Boost insole had thick, ample cushioning, and felt supportive and responsive.  The cut of the opening provided my ankles free, unencumbered movement, while also providing generous cushioning.

A common highlight of the CODECHAOS franchise has been how locked in my heels have been, and the adidas CODECHAOS 27 retained that attribute.  The most secure feeling was provided by the CODECHOAS 27 BOA, which incorporates BOA’s Performance Fit Wrap powered by the BOA Fit System.  That’s a mouthful, but basically the System works by routing lightweight, high-strength cables across the top of the foot to deliver tension evenly.  The dial on the side of the shoe allows for micro-adjustability.  In addition to the improved security, I found the BOA Fit System elevated the overall comfort of the CODECHAOS 27.

Performance

The first thing I noted while hitting golf balls was that the adidas CODECHAOS 27 felt more stable underfoot than my CODECHAOS 25.  The wider base sensation was confirmed when I took some measurements and discovered the outsole was about a ¼” wider across the midfoot and the heel than the CODECHAOS 25.

Traction is once again excellent with the CODECHAOS 27.  You can see in the photo above that the lug elements that form what adidas calls TWISTGRIP vary in size and height.  The narrow space between each zig and zag trap the occasional small pebble or mud, but overall, the layout keeps the sole clear of major debris buildup.  Short turf, heavy rough, or hard packed bunkers – I can’t think of a spikeless golf shoe that provides better traction.

A new design feature is AXISLOCK – a one-piece cradle under the heel that aids in stability during the golf swing.  I wasn’t willing to cut a shoe in half to reveal the full design, but I have to assume the plastic blue and lime green element is part of AXISLOCK.  What I appreciate about the design is that it provided me with lateral support in my backswing (focusing on my right foot as a right hander), while allowing me to flow to the left side through impact.

The TWISTSKIN you can see in the photo above refers to the two-layer uppers material of both models of the CODECHAOS 27.  While thunder threatened several times during my testing rounds, rains never developed, so I reverted to evaluating the adidas water-resistant statements under a steady flow of faucet water.  The water ran off easily and never seemed to threaten saturation.  With the laced model, interior dryness ended with water exposure at the tongue.  The zipped up BOA model did a much better job at keeping the moisture out. Conclusion

The adidas CODECHAOS 27 not only lived up to the family heritage, it raised the bar.  The combination of a wider base and AXISLOCK enhanced the stability – without sacrificing the walking comfort that’s always been part of the appeal of CODECHOAS models.  And as it’s been since the launch of CODECHAOS in 2020, the traction of this model is simply excellent.  The adidas CODECHAOS 27 BOA’s looks may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s no denying the BOA System adds to the fit, comfort, and performance of the shoe.  As for the laced model, it’s going to continue to see a lot of action.
