The Scotty Cameron Futura 5W putter is Cameron’s latest take on the Odyssey #7 style putter. Decent forgiveness and feel but not special.
Introduction
While his good buddy Jordan Spieth is still Scotty Cameron’s #1 poster boy, Justin Thomas has done nearly as much to burnish the reputation of the putter maker. Wielding a custom version of Cameron’s Futura 5, Thomas won the PGA Championship, the FedEx Cup, and the 2017 Player of the Year. The new Futura 5W is a similar design with a key construction difference.
Looks
The “fang” style putter is now nearly universal – almost every putter maker has one. Cameron’s version is more angular with sharp turns from the top line to the shoulders to the flanges. The change in height is similarly angular as the sloping shoulders flatten into the flange.
Another standout visual feature is the black piece that sits in the center of the putter behind the top line. The edges of the black have white sight lines that frame that ball. Together with the top line sight line, there are ample alignment aids.
Sound & Feel
As with many of the Scotty Cameron putters that use this construction, the feel is good but not great. The aluminum face produces a quiet impact sound with a mid-range tone. Pure strikes feel fairly solid, but even small misses seem hollow.
Performance
The Scotty Cameron Futura 5W is a face balanced putter, so it is best suited to players using a straight back, straight through putting stroke. If you want something with toe hang like Justin Thomas’s, you’ll need to spend the big bucks for a “Tour” model. The Futura 5.5M has some toe hang also, but the head shape is different.
Comparing the Futura 5W to the Futura X5, we can see that there is a difference in construction. The older model had an aluminum sole plate, the new one has a sole plate that also wraps up into the face. More aluminum in the middle of the putter means more weight in the perimeter and more forgiveness. I did find the Futura 5W to be quite forgiving, which is, of course, the primary reason to play a mallet.
Conclusion
Whether you’re a Cameron loyalist or a hater (or somewhere in between), it’s indisputable that the Futura 5W is significantly different than the previous iteration. Some may prefer the stainless steel face of the Futura X5, but I like the new aesthetics and the improved forgiveness.

I don’t get why club makers can’t produce the identical putter as a tour player eg Justin Thomas for the general public? There’s no question sales would increase based on having the same putter as a tour player. Isn’t this what TaylorMade does with their TP line? I had some guy try and sell me a TaylorMade Spider Putter say “this is the putter Jason Day uses”. Dude no it isn’t; it has a completely different hosel. TaylorMade subsequently released the Spider Tour, which was identical to Day’s putter. Scotty Cameron should do the same with Justin Thomas’s putter.
It’s cost prohibitive in the case of JT’s putter that has a welded neck. That’s something that has to be done by hand and adds a ton of character depending on the skill of the welder.
But I do agree it’s frustrating seeing manufacturers put out almost but not quite models of what tour guys are using. Just glad TM put out the proper Spider. Would love to see more mallets with slant necks. Glad Odyssey did so.
Richard,
There’s no need for the retail model to have a welded neck, but they could offer the same toe hang with a flow neck or a modified double bend.
Best,
Matt
Hi.
If you had to give this putter stars from 1-5, where would you place your verdict?
Thanks :)
Jonas,
We avoid ratings like that because it takes away from our message of being fit for the best equipment for your game.

Hi, i was wondering what the club head weight is for Futura 5w?
Johan,
It depends on the length – the shorter the length, the heavier the head.
