Precision Pro NX9 HD Laser Rangefinder Review

50 Words or Less

The Precision Pro NX9 HD laser rangefinder gives golfers accurate, slope-adjusted distances at a budget-friendly price.

Introduction

For over three year, Precision Pro has built their name on bringing golfers high performance distance measuring devices at affordable prices.  Their latest top of the line model is the NX9 HD which bundles slope, a magnetic grip, and other key technologies for under $300.  I tested it to see how it compares to the pricier units from the bigger names.

Set Up & Ease of Use

Like most good rangefinders, the NX9 HD requires virtually no set up.  Once you remove the plastic sticker from the battery, you’re ready to go.

Using the NX9 HD is just as simple: push the green Power button to bring up the cross hairs, aim at the flag, and push again.  Tapping the Mode button switches the Slope feature on and off.

My only complaint in this area is that the Mode button is very near the Power button, and I occasionally pressed it by accident.  This is a fine line, because having the Mode button too far away wouldn’t be good either, so your mileage may vary.

Accuracy & Performance

The most important thing must come first: the Precision Pro NX9 HD is really accurate.  I tested it against my Bushnell X2 and got the same yardage every time.  Accuracy is critical, but there are a dozen accurate rangefinders out there.  Let’s get into the differentiators.

What stood out most in my testing was the speed of the NX9 HD.  It felt like the yardage was on the screen before my finger was even off the button.  It’s every bit as fast as the most expensive rangefinders on the market today.

The speed has been one big upgrade over the Precision Pro NX7 Pro (review HERE), but it’s not the only one.  Precision Pro has upgraded the magnification from 6X to 7X and made the display larger.  They’ve also added a magnetic grip which is one of the best upgrades to rangefinders in the last few years.  Being able to keep your laser securely on your cart speeds up play and reduces frustration.

Two other important technologies carry forward from the NX7 Pro: Target Acquisition and Pulse Vibration Technology.  I was skeptical of Pulse Vibration when I first learned about it, but it is a nice confirmation that you’re locked on to the flag.  Target Acquisition is absolutely vital for those of us who don’t have steady hands.

My only critique of the NX9 HD is the layout of the display.  When in Slope mode, the adjusted yardage is displayed in the upper portion of the screen.  I found that this number could be difficult to see depending on how I was holding the rangefinder.  Overall, this is a minor complaint and one that’s easily remedied with a slight movement.

Value

The Precision Pro NX9 HD rangefinder retails for $290 (support PluggedInGolf, buy it HERE).  If the NX9 HD was only a really good rangefinder, it would be a rock solid value.  However, the NX9 HD comes with a two year warranty and lifetime battery replacement.  This elevates the NX9 HD from good value to an absolutely great deal.

Conclusion

Precision Pro continues to deliver more performance for the money than any other company.  The NX9 HD rangefinder has almost every feature that the bigger names do, but at a price that’s substantially lower.

  1. Great unit. Performs as well as any higher end unit (Leupold, Bushnell) at almost half the price. Love, love, love the magnetic strip on the case that eliminates the need for the cumbersome magnetic wraps that often obscure the target button.
HOWEVER, Matt’s observation on the position of the mode button is 100% on point. It is a MAJOR design flaw. Way too easy to activate. Not only does this inadvertently switch slope on and off but also changes yards to meters. This is almost a deal killer when considering whether or not to recommend this unit.

  2. Would like to support, but the link to amazon says “not currently available and they don’t know when….”

Precision Pro, though, has a $20 coupon when you visit their site the first time. Would be nice to support you, though.
