The Original Jones carry bag is simple, well made, and a classic for the regular walker.
Introduction
Jones Golf says their Original carry bag is the most successful and iconic carry bag in the history of the game. The Jones Original’s simple design with updated modern materials makes it a classic carry bag option for the traditional golfer that likes to walk their rounds with minimal gear on board. While not a modern design with loads of technology, this classic makes for a comfortable stroll around the course.
Style
When it comes to style for the Original Jones carry bag, it’s about as simple and classic as it comes, and I love it. There are six different color options – black, green, red, maroon, blue, and gray – all paired with white. The “twisty” handle gives the bag a little bit of flair, but the two-tone color, single strap, and lack of branding make for a very streamlined and traditional look.
Quality
The quality of the Original Jones bag is far and away its crowning achievement. The nylon and vinyl materials are very durable and lightweight without sacrificing the overall appearance of the bag. All of the hardware like zippers and the strap buckle are heavy duty and won’t break down on you with regular use. The strap is well padded, very comfortable, and makes for an easy carry even as a single strap.
Design & Performance
The Original Jones bag does what it was designed to do well. At the end of the day, the purpose of the Original Jones bag is to serve the walking golfer, and I found it to do that job well. To do this the bag needs to be lightweight and comfortable to carry. While you won’t be able to stuff a million different things into the bag (which you shouldn’t, this is a walking bag), there are two small pockets for balls, tees, and other smaller goods. On the bottom of the bag, there’s a full length pocket for a coat or other larger wares. I like to think of it as the cargo bay of the plane. I just can’t get that picture out of my head. There’s also an umbrella holder smoothly added on the outside to keep the main club compartment open for clubs.
The only flaw I found was the divider system. There are three sections at the top of the bag, but there are no full length dividers. I understand the bag is not structured, but even soft nylon dividers would be nice. You can very comfortably fit fourteen clubs into the bag, but the lack of dividers make it difficult to avoid some tangling. That said, I did not find this to be a deal breaker.
I’m not going to lie to you: I didn’t expect to be crazy about this bag, but once I loaded it up and gave it a go, I loved it. I thought it looked super cool and was super easy to use. Even though we’ve gotten spoiled by backpack style straps, the single strap was perfectly fine and I found a properly filled bag easy to lug around for 18 holes.
Conclusion
With the evolution of the modern golf game and its space age technology, crazy colors and materials, and whatever else our grandpas never dreamed of, it’s nice to have a classic, traditional option like the Original Jones bag that could have been seen on golf courses decades ago. There’s something refreshing in showing up to the driving range with an old school bag slung over your shoulder with nothing but a few balls and tees in the pockets and tossing it on a stand or on the ground like you might have done as a kid.

I’ve been using this bag for a few months now. It is exactly what I was looking for in a carry bag – light weight, great look, quality material, and the classic/single strap/leather/no stand design that is well built really makes this a nice bag to use for walking!
I too, have always loved their bags, but must admit….not sure I can live without the kick stand on modern bags. It keeps the bag and clubs dry and keeps me upright, LOL. The single strap is something I actually prefer. Still, the cool factor of these bags and the Jones name have me tempted to call Santa.
The good news is that Jones also offers stand bags, and they’re also pretty slick. Head over to their website and check them out. There are a couple floating around here and we love them too.
retro is cool and materials may be better than recent stand up bag I just purchased but it does not have the newest integrated pick up/carry handle I specifically think is a must on newer bags and find very convenient.
