50 Words or Less
The Me and My Golf Games Putting Mat is the most engaging putting mat I’ve ever tested. Nearly unlimited ways to play. Very large, so make sure you have enough space before buying.
Introduction
When I launched Plugged In Golf almost ten years ago, there were a lot of bad putting mats. Over the last couple years, those have gone extinct – nearly every mat rolls smooth and true. What separates mats now is how they get the golfer to engage with their practice, and I have not found a better one than the Me and My Golf Games Putting Mat.
Set Up & Ease of Use
The Me and My Golf Games Putting Mat comes with the mat, instruction book, and two sleeves of breaking balls. If you missed my review of the Me and My Golf Breaking Balls Putting Mat [find it HERE], the breaking balls are golf balls with a weight in one side to create a break. The balls work as advertised and are fairly intuitive.
As I referenced earlier, modern putting mats are almost universally excellent. The heavy rubber bottom makes this mat almost perfectly flat right out of the box. There was a small amount of curling at the far edges, but that flattened out easily with a couple heavy books. Given the size of the mat (14 feet by 2.2 feet), it’s likely there will be some “break” to it unless you have amazingly level floors.
The Games Putting Mat also comes with a series of training videos. These videos don’t deal with the mat as much as they give you general putting tips. The videos are fine, but the instruction book is more relevant to learning the ins and outs of all the mat’s games.
Effectiveness & Longevity
Normally Effectiveness and Longevity are two separate categories, but in the case of the Me and My Golf Games Putting Mat, they are one and the same. The mat rolls smooth and very quickly (they claim 11 on the stimpmeter), so it gives you accurate feedback. Where it levels up is in the ways it keeps you putting.
There are six games on this mat: Tic Tac Toe, Darts, Curling, Football, Hacker, and an 18-hole putting course. Tic Tac Toe is played on the blue gird (above), with players trying to get three in a row. Darts and Curling are both played on the ringed target (above), but the rules differ slightly. With all three of these games, the challenge can be scaled up or down by adding distance or using the breaking balls.
Football uses the mat’s one foot grid and challenges players to make putts from increasing distance. Each made putt moves that player’s team down the field until they score and win the game. It’s a simple game that adds a lot of competitive pressure to putting.
Hacker is the putting version of basketball’s horse. Any number of players can compete using all the mat’s length, markings, and breaking balls to create putts that other players must replicate. Six failed attempts makes you the hacker.
Finally, the Games Putting Mat allows you to play an entire 18-hole putting course. In the instruction book, it lays out where each hole starts and where the fairway is. Water, bunker, and OB (above) will add strokes to your score if you’re inaccurate. The booklet also has empty pages where you can develop your own putting course. This is, in my opinion, the most clever use of the Games Putting Mat.
Of course, if you want to keep things straightforward, you can use this mat with trainers like the PuttOUT Pressure Trainer [review HERE] or the Lights Out [review HERE]. But the bottom line is that if you have this mat and you get bored of putting, that’s a you problem.
Value
The Me and My Golf Games Putting Mat retails for $200. This is on par with other mats of similar quality and size. You also get two sleeves of breaking balls which adds a lot of value. Most importantly, this mat is unlike any other for the way it keeps you engaged. If you have the space, this is a great value.
Conclusion
If you have the space to dedicate to the Me and My Golf Games Putting Mat, I would recommend it over any other mat I’ve tested. I absolutely love the way that the games keep you engaged with your practice. The breaking balls add a whole second layer of value. If you want to add challenge and fun to your at-home practice, this mat is fantastic.
