The Bushnell Wingman HD has a vivid color touchscreen integrated into its rich audio speaker system. Paired with the Bushnell Golf app, the Wingman HD turns into a full featured GPS distance device. Strong magnet.
Introduction
With the addition of an LCD screen, Matt concluded in his review of the Bushnell Wingman View GPS Speaker [review HERE] that it was “a substantial upgrade over the original.” With one look at the 3.5” touchscreen of the new Bushnell Wingman HD I knew that “substantial upgrade” probably wouldn’t be an adequate descriptor for this iteration. Opening the rather snazzy looking box, I couldn’t wait to see – and hear – what the Bushnell Wingman HD could deliver.
Setup & Ease of Use
Inside that snazzy box I found the Bushnell Wingman HD, USB charging cable, carabiner clip, lanyard, cleaning cloth, and Quick Start Guide. The Wingman HD arrived with plenty of charge and turned on via the big “B” button on the front. I paired the speaker with my phone via Bluetooth and was enjoying tunes in moments. To engage the golf GPS functions, the Bushnell Golf app is required and there’s a QR code inside the Quick Start Guide to get that download started. Pairing the Wingman HD and the app is straightforward – the device initiates a pairing code that you enter into the prompt on the app. Simple – and that’s coming from a guy who grew up when phones were on walls with long coiled cords.
The device interface is intuitive, and the app is solid, but you’ll want to refer to the Quick Start Guide for some unique basics mainly around the “B” button functionality. For a few of the advanced features, which I’ll highlight in a moment, you’ll want to review the User Manual. There’s a QR code for accessing the User Manual in the Quick Start Guide, which takes you to the Bushnell Golf website for the actual download.
Selecting “Play” on the Bushnell Golf app populated courses and with a few more clicks my round was started. The first hole was vividly displayed on the Wingman HD screen.
Accuracy & Performance
The primary screen on the Wingman HD displays center, front, and back distances for the green. I found the yardages updated quickly while the cart was in motion. I also found the yardages to be the same, or within a few yards, as course markers.

That basic information is great, but the Wingman HD has a lot more to offer. Swiping left from the home screen brings you to a display of hazards.

Swiping right displays a view of the green. In the app you can move the pin locations with distance adjusted – and displayed – as “pin” instead of “center.”

Swiping up brings you to a screen for adjusting screen and audio settings. Swiping down brings you to a nifty function – shot distance.
Above the screen, the large -/+ and play buttons made adjusting the volume quick and easy. At the bottom of the screen the left and right arrows allow you to navigate holes. The big “O” between them is what Bushell refers to as a ‘soft key’ that can be set to the user’s liking for particular displays such as scorecard, or for golf announcements (spoken distances). The big “B” button can also be set for various functions. The settings are made via the app, and I found the User Manual invaluable for knowing what options exist and getting them straight.
Speaking of announcements, the Bushnell Wingman HD continues the Wingman tradition of sound bites. With a few taps of the screen you can engage a variety of claps or cheers. Users can also record their own sound bites – great for a classic “that’s a peach” or an inappropriate “get in the hole.” There’s also a first tee introduction feature to announce your playing partners by name with selected crowd response.

While on the subject of sound, I have to say the Bushnell Wingman HD has amazing sound. The twin 15-watt speakers and two passive radiators provided a rich sound that was clean and pleasing at low and high volumes. And I really enjoyed seeing the album cover – even when engaged in the GPS aspects.

And this review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning that the BITE magnet is really strong. I attempted to give the unit a nudge to straighten it for a photo and it didn’t budge. It took a concerted effort to remove the Wingman HD from the cart frame.
I’ll close out this section with MyBag – a collaboration between Bushnell and Foresight Sports that allows users to generate and utilize real life club data for club selection. I didn’t engage this feature, but it’s another layer of technology that Bushnell has incorporated into the Wingman HD.
Value
The Bushnell Wingman HD retails for $199 – the same price as the previous model. With the addition of the 3.5” touchscreen alone – never mind all the features associated with it – offering the Wingman HD at the same price seems a value. Blue Tees has also upgraded their magnetic speaker [original review HERE], and taking a quick comparative look, the Bushnell Wingman HD looks to be by far the superior offering at equal price points.
The alternatives for sound and golf GPS are many. Options are limited for speakers with magnets, but there are portable units aplenty – often at less than $50. For golf GPS, golfers can find apps for free, small cart mount units like the Bushnell Phantom 3 [review HERE] for $170, and smart golf watches ranging from $150 to $700. The combination Bushnell offers with the Wingman HD seems like a good value – for the right golfer.
Conclusion
The Bushnell Wingman HD is an amazing device. The 3.5” touchscreen is vivid and user friendly, and the sound is super high quality. One nagging question persists for me: has the Wingman morphed into a device with an ever-narrowing market? I know only a few golfers who typically enjoy music on the course, but usually there’s at least one golfer in my foursome that has some sort of GPS device. Seeing similar usage while playing around the country, I have to conclude that there’s a limited number of golfers who want the best of both worlds. But for those folks, the Bushnell Wingman HD seems to be a very compelling choice.
