Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: everything is getting more expensive. That includes golf grips. The most popular grip in golf, the Golf Pride MCC, is now $13 a piece. That means changing out a full thirteen club set comes to $169…before labor!
If you’re looking for a more affordable alternative, or just want to try something a bit different, let me introduce you to the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip. Can you get the same great feel and performance for 30% less money? Or could these be even better? I tested a set to find out.
Looks
There is a lot for your eye to take in with the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip. Like golf’s most popular grip, there’s a double split between the top and bottom halves – color and texture. That pushes the titular diamond pattern into a secondary role. Personally, I really like the diamond as it gives this grip a unique character and adds another layer of visual interest.
There are nine colorways available for the Diamond Hybrid grip. In addition to the six shown above, there is pink/white, white/grey, and white/black. Lots of golfers will be able to find their team’s colors in this mix, or you can keep it traditional with muted tones. Regular readers can probably guess that for me the blue/navy is a potential gamer, the light blue/white is headed for the bin. [See Price / Buy]
Feel
The idea behind a combo-style grip like the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip is to have a different feeling in each hand. Mission accomplished. The upper portion is firm, the lower has a nice amount of squish to it. If I were rating each side from 0 to 10 (0 being rock hard), I would call the upper a 3 and the lower a 6. In addition to being firmer, the upper portion of the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip has a fairly heavy cord. There’s at least as much cord to this as there is in an MCC.
One thing that separates the Diamond Hybrid from the MCC is the amount of traction in the lower portion. The diamond pattern and a flock of “V”s makes the lower hand feel secure. I’m not suggesting this is a night-and-day difference from the MCC, but it’s noticeable when they’re side by side.
Performance
As someone who has gamed MCC grips for over a decade, the feel of the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip was very comfortable to me. The one thing that was different is the shape. I’ve moved to Golf Pride’s Plus Four model with reduced taper. The Diamond Hybrid has a more conventional taper – 27mm at the butt, 19mm at the end. I found the difference noticeable but not something that really hampered my play. Also, if you want to get rid of the taper, you can do so with an extra wrap of tape.
The core feature of the half-cord grip is all-weather traction, and the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip has that in spades. I sprayed the grip with water and still maintained solid control throughout the swing. As I noted earlier, there are more traction elements on the lower half of the Diamond Hybrid than the MCC, and I really like that. As a frequent half-set player I hit a lot of choked-down shots, and having more grip in the lower hand is a welcome change.
I did the same durability testing for the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip as I did for their GLP Velvet grip [review HERE]. For ten straight days, I made at least ten swings with the same grip, including excessive squeezing, re-gripping, and rubbing. After ten days, I compared the used grip to a new one. Side-by-side, I could tell the used grip from new, but the used grip remained completely playable, even without cleaning. I may update this review as I get a larger sample size, but my initial conclusion is that the longevity of the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip is at least as good as the MCC, maybe better.
The Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip if offered in standard, midsize, and oversize. They weigh 50, 70, and 78 grams, respectively. Among the ten grips that I tested, the weight ranged from 69 to 71 grams, and nine of the grips were either 69 or 70 grams. This is extremely impressive, among the very best I’ve ever seen for consistency. [See Price / Buy]
Conclusion
Priced between $7.19 and $8.99 each, the Wedge Guys Diamond Hybrid grip is a much more affordable way to get a fresh hold on your clubs.
