Sun Mountain ClubGlider 3 Travel Bag

50 Words or Less

The Sun Mountain ClubGlider3 travel bag is a high quality travel bag with technology.  The retractable kickstand wheels are a fun bonus that makes it easier to travel with your clubs.

Introduction

Over the past few years I’ve played a bunch of golf when traveling, and never once questioned whether I would rent clubs or bring my clubs with me.  Whatever the cost of a checked bag, it’s worth it compared to the thought of trying to make a swing with a rented seven iron.  I’ve appreciated the new bag tracking that most airlines offer now.  In the past, I had to just wait and wait, and hope my clubs would come out.  I’ve made it to California, Tennessee, and Scotland three times, never having an issue with my clubs.

That is, until this April, when my clubs never arrived on my return flight.  “Did you have an AirTag?”  Everyone, including Plugged in Golf’s own Matt Saternus, asked upon hearing the story.  No, Matt, I did not.

Since my clubs were never recovered, I was excited to try out the Sun Mountain ClubGlider3.  Sun Mountain touts that the bag has a kickstand with wheels.  I never considered if my travel bag needed extra wheels, so I was curious to see if a four wheeled travel bag would be useful, or just a gimmick.

Looks

My previous travel bag was gray and red, and I loved having a unique color that stood out among the other bags on the carousel.  I believe I am not alone in having anxiety while waiting for my clubs to come out, so I value the ability to know that it’s my bag as soon as I see it.  The Sun Mountain ClubGlider3 comes in eight different colors, so you have a great opportunity to choose something that fits your personality.

There is a Thermoform-molded casing that is visible from the outside at the top of the bag.  This is designed to bring added protection to the club heads.  When the kickstand is extended the bag sits at a 45 degree angle.  Upon first glance, it looks like the bag is about to tip over, but it stays in place and sits at the perfect height to grab it as you continue along your journey. Features

The patented kickstand is what sets the The Sun Mountain ClubGlider3 apart from other travel bags.  When extended, the bag rolls on four wheels and stays at a 45 degree angle.  Initially I did not think this was a necessary or helpful feature, but I was wrong.

Even though you always check your golf bag when flying, you generally have a long walk to the ticketing counter that involves a lot of stopping and starting as you wait in line, board trams, and go up and down escalators.  The added wheels keep the bag at a perfect angle, so you never have to lay the bag on the ground, or try to stand it up vertically as you make your way through the airport.

Additionally, the Sun Mountain ClubGlider 3 has a built-in TSA lock.  This works by locking the zipper pulls in place, so the bag can only be opened by a code you set or a TSA agent.  There is an AirTag pocket on the inside of the bag, which gives me added motivation to buy an AirTag and keep track of my clubs as they fly.  The airline that lost my clubs has a place in their online portal to link your AirTag, so they can use the information to help them find your bag.  So don’t let the AirTag pocket go to waste!

There are two large pockets on the outside of the Sun Mountain ClubGlider3.  Each one of these pockets is big enough to fit one size 13 shoe.  There are two mesh pockets inside of the bag that are too small for shoes.  These would be good for stuffing in extra balls, towels, and rain gear.  There is also a small strap on the inside of the bag with a hook for your keys.

Performance

The Sun Mountain ClubGlider3 travel bag’s high quality wheels makes walking with clubs a breeze.  They remind me of the smoothness of rollerblading indoors when I was younger.  The extra wheels can spin around, so it makes turning very easy.

To extend the wheels, you stand up the bag vertically, pull the bar down, and the kickstand pops out. I appreciated that the kickstand has permanent graphics showing which direction to pull down.  It requires both hands to get the kickstand out, one to hold the bag in place, and another to pull down the bar.  If you are thinking of extending the legs while holding other luggage, this will not be possible.

The top of the Sun Mountain ClubGlider3 has a Thermoform-molded casing to protect your club heads.  The bag is predominantly made out of a polyester ripstop fabric. The fabric feels thin, but Sun Mountain says it is weather and abrasion resistant.  Durability is perhaps the most important feature in a travel bag.  This is not a piece of equipment you want to be upgrading often, if ever.

There are four handles that help when loading, unloading, and bringing this bag wherever you need to go.  The handles are sturdy.  When paired with the ripstop fabric, there was no stressing, or extra pulling from any part of the bag.  The Sun Mountain ClubGlider3 feels like this bag will last for many years to come.

Value

The Sun Mountain ClubGlider3 retails for $450.  This is over $100 more than Club Glove’s Last Bag [review HERE], and Sunday Golf’s Coaster Travel Bag [review HERE].

The major difference is the kickstand wheels that come with the Sun Mountain ClubGlider3.  Is this worth an extra $100?  It is if you are a gear head who likes unique features on your equipment, or if you are someone who has a tough time lugging your clubs around through airports. Conclusion

The Sun Mountain ClubGlider3 is a top of the line travel bag with a top of the line price point.  I’m always happy to spend money on my golf equipment, but I still try be smart with where the dollars are allocated.  I haven’t had trouble transporting my clubs, so the extra wheels would not be worth the extra cost for me.  If you don’t have a golf budget, want a fun toy, or have trouble lugging your clubs through the airport, this bag will not disappoint.  It has everything you need – and more!  [See Price / Buy]
