AyrSupport is an “inflatable golf travel bag insert” designed to protect your clubs from the abuse of airline baggage handling. Requires some effort to pack, but it provides an incredible level of protection.

Introduction
Very early in my golfing life, I had a stand bag destroyed during air travel. I walked the shattered leg into the “Baggage Assistance” office hoping for reimbursement only to be told, “If your clubs aren’t in a hard case, we take no responsibility.”
From that day forth, I’ve traveled exclusively with a coffin-sized hard plastic case. My clubs have been safe, but I always need to rent the largest possible car to accommodate the case. Not ideal.
AyrSupport is a new product that aims to offer the superior protection of a hard case with the convenience of a soft case. Can this inflatable insert keep your clubs safe from the punishment the airlines dish out? I tested it to find out.

Set Up & Ease of Use
When you unbox AyrSupport, you’ll find everything tucked neatly inside a branded drawstring bag. There’s the inflatable insert, an “Insert Before Flight” tag, and the mini air pump.
AyrSupport provides a clear set of instructions on their website and in the box with the product, but I found it to be fairly intuitive. Connect the pump to the insert and fill it with air. The air pump does not “clip into” the insert, so you’ll need to hold it in position throughout the filling. AyrSupport’s website says that inflation only takes 90 seconds, but I found that it took a few minutes.

Once it’s inflated, place AyrSupport inside your travel case followed by your golf bag. Wrap the insert around your golf bag like a blanket, “seal” it with the Velcro closures, and then zip up the travel case. Simple.
You can deflate AyrSupport by pushing the center button inside the valve. Now the insert can go back inside the drawstring bag, which can go inside your travel bag, taking up minimal space while it waits for your next golf adventure. [See Price / Buy]
Effectiveness
For this review, I tested AyrSupport with my Club Glove Last Bag [review HERE]. I started by checking the fit with different types of golf bags. First up was my beloved Koger Sunday Bag [review HERE] which fit fairly easily. No surprise there. Next was the Ghost Golf Anyday bag [review HERE], a heavier, full-sized stand bag. That fit, but it was tight.

Finally, I tried the Motocaddy Dry Series bag, a very bulky cart bag. With that, I could not get the bag zipped. I tried deflating the insert slightly, as recommended, but it still wouldn’t go. This isn’t a knock on Motocaddy, AyrSupport, or Club Glove, but a warning that, if you want to travel with a big cart bag, you’ll need a very large travel cover to use AyrSupport.

To challenge the durability and protective powers of AyrSupport, the Plugged In Golf team put our heads together to come up with a test that was extremely rigorous but didn’t risk destroying my own clubs or bag. We decided to fill a golf bag with five 1/4″ dowel rods to simulate the shafts. An egg and an apple were put inside headcovers to see how club heads would fare. Once it was loaded up, the bag was abused beyond reason: I threw it off an eight-foot ladder twice, kicked it, rolled it across pavement, and threw other luggage on top of it.
Admittedly, this test went beyond anything that would be required for keeping golf clubs safe. Golf clubs are forged or cast metal, not eggs. My hope was that the wood and fruit would make it through unbroken, but I did not expect the egg to survive.

The first positive result was found immediately on unzipping the bag: the AyrSupport insert was intact. Next, I went to the dowel rods. AyrSupport achieved a 100% pass rate. Finally, I pulled out the head covers. The apple was perfect – no bruises and no juice inside the Ziploc bag. And the egg….the egg survived too!
Overall, the protection that AyrSupport provides is fantastic. While I was abusing it, I noted that the other luggage actually bounced off it, and the whole bag bounced when I slammed it on the ground. In some ways, this is even better than a hard case because your clubs aren’t crashing against the hard plastic.
Value
AyrSupport is not cheap, retailing for $299. And to be clear, that does not include a travel case (though they are working on one), that’s purely for the pump and the inflatable insert.
To give some reference points, the hard plastic SKB case that I use retails for somewhere around $300. Club Glove’s Traveler bags cost between $350 and $550, and Caddy Daddy’s First Class is a great value at $170 [review HERE].
Given the cost, I think the AyrSupport user falls into one of two camps. First, the golfer who is very committed to their soft travel bag but wants more protection. Second is the golfer for whom space is at a premium, either at home or when traveling. If a hard case is not a viable alternative for you, AyrSupport is a solid value. [See Price / Buy]

Conclusion
If you want to give your golf clubs maximum protection from the rigors of air travel, AyrSupport is one of the best options available. It offers safety and security like a hard case in the convenience and lower weight of a soft travel cover. There are certainly cheaper options, but it’s hard to put a price on the safe arrival of your golf clubs. [See Price / Buy]
