2023 Recap of The Players Championship

Ponte Vedra, FL – Scottie Scheffler has won 2023’s The Players Championship.  With a score of 17-under par, he earned the single largest winner’s check in PGA Tour history, $4.5 million dollars.  With this win, he’s risen to the rank of number one golfer in the world, ousting Jon Rahm.

This marks the sixth PGA Tour title and his second win this season, following his win at the WM Phoenix Open.  Scheffler started out the day leading the tournament by two and put his foot on the gas pedal.  Starting on hole 8, he would go on to score five straight birdies.  Those birdies would end up being the difference in the end, as he would ultimately win by five strokes over Tyrrell Hatton.

At what many consider “golf’s fifth major” there were a ton of other players looking to make their mark, but ultimately it was a rout by Scheffler.  The former world number one, Rahm, ended up having to withdraw due to illness early in the week, and other top talents like Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick ended up missing the cut.

Those who stuck around and made an impact included Tom Hoge and Viktor Hovland, who both tied for third place with a score of 10-under-par.  Hoge’s story was particularly interesting as he went from barely making the cut on Friday to shooting a course-record 62 on Saturday.  Another Master’s winner like Scheffler, Hideki Matsuyama, rounded out the top 5 with a score of 9-under for the tournament.

The next PGA Tour event taking finishing a week from today will be the Valspar Championship.  There, Sam Burns will be attempting to go for the incredibly difficult task of a “threepeat” – winning the event three years in a row.  That challenge will be made even more difficult given three other top 15 world-ranked golfers: Justin Thomas, Jordan Speith, and Matt Fitzpatrick will be there to try and stop him.
