2020 US Open Recap

Mamaroneck, NY – Bryson DeChambeau breaks through to win the 2020 US Open at the famed Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. The toughest test in golf proved to be no match for the first time winner and one length iron pioneer as he cruised to a 6-shot win.

It was a cool, Fall afternoon in New York on Sunday with rookie Mathew Wolff holding the 54-hole lead.  Winged Foot had been getting increasingly more difficult as the week went on.  Thursday had the lowest average score and those scores only went up from there.  Bryson DeChambeau, however, defied the odds with his unique bag setup and recent strength gains to overpower one of what many consider the hardest course setups in golf.

Bryson only managed to to hit 6 fairways on Sunday but averaged 336 yards off the tee which led to hitting 11 greens in regulation.  His birdie at the 4th was offset by his bogey at the eighth but Mathew Wolff gave up the lead after 3 bogeys in his first 8 holes.  Both players managed to hit the green in 2 and make an eagle on the par-5 9th, keeping Bryson at only a one-shot lead heading to the back nine.

From here, Bryson began to pull away from Wolff and ultimately the rest of the field.  Wolff bogeyed the 10th, while Bryson birdied the 11th stretching the lead to 3.  Wolff fell back even further after posting a 3-over in his last 5 holes.   Bryson continued to impress as he parred out from there, even making a long par putt on 18 to cap his first major victory.  Bryson was also the only player to break par on Sunday.

Rory McIlroy had put himself in contention for Sunday but shot a 5-over 75 and fell to a tie for 8th.  Tiger Woods missed the cut after shooting a total of 10-over in the first 2 days.  Jordan Spieth continues to struggle as he missed the cut shooting 14-over after 2 days in NY.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads down to PuntaCana while players begin to prepare for the rescheduled Masters Tournament which will be held in November.
