Brandt Snedeker rides first round 59 to victory

Greensboro, NC – After finishing a rain delayed third round Sunday morning, Brandt Snedeker kept the hammer down on Sunday afternoon to win the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 37-year-old has played well as of late and made this his first victory of the season and the ninth PGA Tour victory of his career and first since 2016. His first career PGA Tour victory also came at this tournament, in 2007. After seeing several other players challenge for the lead, Snedeker shot 65 on Sunday to cement a three shot victory.

While the highlight of the week was undoubtedly his first round 59, which brought him into an elite club of players who have shot a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour, Snedeker showed his determination throughout the rest of the week, shooting 67, 68, 65 to close the deal on Sunday. With the win, Snedeker jumped 50 spots in the FedEx Cup standings, from 80 to 30, heading into the first week of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The top 30 automatically qualify for the Tour Championship.

Snedeker wasn’t the only one to make a move in the FedEx Cup standings. With his wife on the bag for the week, C.T. Pan put together four solid rounds (65, 64, 67, 66) but double bogeyed his 72nd hole to finish at -18. With that finish, Pan is projected to jump 45 spots to 63 in the FedEx Cup rankings. Also finishing T2 was this year’s Players champion Webb Simpson. Simpson shot 62 on Sunday to charge up the leaderboard and jump up 5 spots to 7 in the FedEx Cup standings.

While most of the world’s top players and the players at the top of the FedEx Cup standings took this week off, almost all of them will be in action next week at The Northern Trust at Ridgewood CC in Paramus, New Jersey. Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler both announced that they will take the week off, but the likes of Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose, and back-to-back U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka will tee it up.
