The VPAR Golf app is a great app for scoring tournaments and game among friends. Also has solid GPS and score tracking features for the individual golfer.
Introduction
Most golfers have had the experience of playing in a tournament – be it highly competitive or a casual charity event – and putting together a great round. Unlike the pros, however, you have no idea where your round stands in relation the field. Do you need another birdie or could a simple par allow you to hoist the trophy?
This situation is what led to the birth of VPAR Golf. VPAR Golf is an app that has great functionality for the solo golfer, but really shines in group and tournament play.
GPS Functionality
Just like virtually every golf app, VPAR can replace your standalone GPS or laser rangefinder. As you can see, VPAR uses real satellite images, not cartoon drawings, which I prefer. The GPS functions well, allowing you to quickly see the distances to the front, back, and center of the green as well as the distance to any point on the hole.
Scoring
Where the VPAR Golf app really shines is when you’re playing with a group or having a competition with multiple foursomes. Once your game is set up, entering the scores of everyone in the group takes no longer than writing them on the scorecard. The benefit over pencil and paper is that everyone’s handicaps are automatically factored in, and you can keep track of players in others groups. Admittedly, I didn’t really “get it” until I used this on the course, so if you’re still skeptical, give it a try.
VPAR is also useful for the solo golfer in that it’s a quick, easy way to keep your score, track your handicap, and watch your progress over time.
Conclusion
If you tend to be the organizing force among your golfing buddies, the VPAR Golf app is a must-download. It’s got good functions for the solo golfer, but it really shines when you use it with friends.

When i log into the app, and go to my favorite course, there is a black square, and when you click on it, it says gps not available for this hole. And it is on every hole. When i got the app, it doesnt say in app purchase, so i dont understand why it does show gps, club selection etc. Is this a pay app?
Brett,
I haven’t used VPAR in a while, so I’m not sure what is or is not behind a pay wall at this point. I would suggest contacting the company directly.
Best,
