The 2024 Valspar Championship Recap

Palm Harbor, Florida – Long time journeyman Peter Malnati is once again a champion on the PGA Tour as the 2024 Valspar Championship winner.  Peter outlasted Cameron Young and a charging Xander Schauffele to take home a trophy for the first time in over eight years as a professional.  His last victory came at the 2015 Sanderson Farms Championship in Napa, California.

This week’s tournament hosted by the Copperhead course at Innisbrook golf resort is always a tough test, as proven by the relatively low scores.  Despite the typical flat Florida course, the Copperhead course is known for its difficult elevation changes and speedy greens.  Of course, there is also the snake pit which is comprised of holes 16-18 because of how tough they are.  Kevin Kisner made a quad (8) on the par 4 16th hole in his first round.  Tony Finau also made a double in his second round at the 16th.  Both players missed the cut.

Kevin Streelman was the low man on Thursday carding a 64 to take an early 18 hole lead.  Unfortunately, he followed his first round up with three rounds over par and finishing in a tie for 26th.  Another highlight of the week was seeing 50 year old Stewart Cink on the leaderboard after his first 36 holes of golf.  He posted six under par after two rounds before stumbling into a 5 over par 76 on Saturday to derail his chances of being the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event.

Heading into the final round, it was Keith Mitchell’s tournament to lose but we know golf can be a fickle game.  Keith made four bogeys on the front nine with no birdies.  While he did manage an eagle on the par 5 14th hole, he also made a double bogey on the hole prior.  His day ended with a birdie but his round but a six over 77 dropped from first (and in the last group) to a tie for 17th.  Mitchell’s poor final round gave way to several other players including Peter Malnati.  Peter’s front nine was nothing impressive as he went out in even par.  He then found luightning in a bottle and rattled off three birds in a row at 10, 11, and 12.  Peter and Cameron Young both sat at 11 under but Peter birdied 17 when Young bogeyed 18 which sealed a 2 stroke lead as Malnati came down 18.  Peter made par and the emotion was obvious.  As it should be.  Peter’s second overall PGA Tour win and first win since 2015.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Texas for the Texas Children’s Houston Open, with just two events left before the first Major of the year.
