Nicklaus Collection Apparel Review

50 Words or Less

With a pleasant regular fit and modern graphics, the Nicklaus Collection offers golfers affordable shirts and shorts for a strong performance on the course – just like its namesake.

Introduction

Jack Nicklaus is a name forever embedded in golf history.  For over 50 years, the Nicklaus Companies have been providing golf products and services around the world.  The Nicklaus Collection is the latest line of golf apparel that will be sold exclusively at Target stores and on Target.com.

Performance

For most golfers, performance comes down to not impeding the swing and staying comfortable.  I encountered no restrictions to any actions, golf or otherwise, with the Nicklaus Collection.  Noteworthy was the extra stretch in the waist of the shorts.

For moisture wicking, all the pieces I tested were polyester and incorporated StayDri technology.  The polos performed the task well, even in extremely hot and humid conditions.  Although I loved the size and depth of the pockets in the shorts, the material thickness was a bit heavy and seemed to impede the wicking ability of the main fabric.

Style & Fit

Although marketed as fashion clothing for everyday use, the Nicklaus Collection screams golf in my opinion.  But that’s not a bad thing when the label and buttons have 18 time major winner Jack Nicklaus’s name on them.  The shorts have some versatility, but the shiny, printed polos are very golf-centric.

Sizing in both tops and bottoms is standard – no need to go up or down from your usual.  Overall the shirts have a regular cut with sleeves that just cover the biceps.  The shorts fall to mid knee.  The fit is a little baggy around the chest and just below the hips, but I don’t expect a tailored fit at price points half or a third of other golf brands.

It doesn’t fit into any of our categories, but I have to mention the side leg pocket on the shorts.  It’s so nice to have a place to slip your cell phone before and after your round of golf.

Conclusion

Providing golfers quality clothing at affordable pricing in a sport known for excesses can only be good for the game.  The material quality and cut aren’t the same as the high-end brands, but that’s to be expected.

You can’t bring more legitimacy to a brand than having Mr. Nicklaus associated with it, but being worn by a current young tour player is also positive.  Here’s what PGA professional Willy Wilcox had to say about the Nicklaus Collection recently on Twitter:  “This brand is the best I’ve worn since turning pro in ’09.”  In fact in the associated video clip, he’s wearing the striped Bluebird polo I featured in this review.
