My Ultimate Swing is a golf training app designed to help you find your best swing and repeat it more often. Not the smoothest user experience. Good way for storing swing videos. Lots of data, but it’s not clear what to do with it.
Introduction
From the moment that golf coaches could connect video cameras to their computers, they’ve been putting Mrs. Havercamp on screen side-by-side with Tiger Woods. The problems with this approach are obvious: she’s not Tiger Woods. Neither am I, neither are you. Yet, to this day, golf coaches use PGA Tour pros as the models for recreational golfers to copy.
The key difference with My Ultimate Swing is right in the name: it’s not about the ultimate swing, it’s about each golfer’s ultimate swing. This app aims to capture your best swing and help you repeat it more often through AI-driven motion analysis.
Set Up & Ease of Use
As with any app, the first step is downloading My Ultimate Swing from your app store of choice (MUS is available for iOS and Android). Open it up, create your account, adjust a couple settings, and you’re good to go. My Ultimate Swing provides a solid user’s guide HERE which, but I do wish it was a bit more focused.
Using the app starts with filming your swing – anything from drives to chips to putts. Per the guide, the camera should be about ten feet away from you. This can make it a bit difficult to record your swing. In my garage hitting bay, I don’t have ten feet of space for a face-on or down-the-line view, and getting ten feet of space for face-on at a range can be tricky. I found that ten feet was not completely necessary for getting myself into the frame.
Once you tap the Record button, there’s a ten second countdown for you to get back to the ball. Make your swing once the timer is over, and then tell the app how to store the swing. You categorize by swing type – Wood, Iron, Short Game, and Putting – and whether it’s a My Ultimate Swing or just a regular one. This latter decision matters for making comparisons later on.
Overall, My Ultimate Swing isn’t hard to use, but it falls short of being totally intuitive. It’s also not the fastest – it takes several seconds for the app to start up, and swing comparisons can take ten seconds or more to generate. [See Price / Buy]
Effectiveness
The heart of the My Ultimate Swing app is the swing comparison tool (only available with the Premium subscription, more on this below). To use this, tap “Compare Videos” and then select between front and side views. Then you’ll select one of your Ultimate Swings to compare with one of your regular swings. You can also choose which body parts get anayzed: Head, Hands, Pelvis, Shoulders, and/or Feet (above, left).
Inside the comparison, you’ll see your Ultimate Swing above your comparison swing. The two videos get synched automatically, and this alone is valuable. You can watch the video with or without your chosen metrics on the screen (see below). The other feature is Metrics, where the app shows the deviations between the two swings in terms of Sway (in centimeters) and Rotation (in degrees) for your Head, Shoulder, Hands, Spine, Pelvis, Knee, and Foot. The hope is that this data gives you the ability to make more swings like your Ultimate Swing, and it creates a reference point for the future.
For players that love data and filming their swing, there’s a lot to like about My Ultimate Swing. Primarily, I like that it’s a well-organized place for storing all your swing videos. Not only are they all in one app, they’re clearly divided by club/swing type and whether or not the swing was good.
Unfortunately, there are several issues with this app. First, the video playback is not perfect. You can’t “scrub” the video, and the two swings can get out of synch. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it’s a drag on the overall user experience.
Most importantly, it’s not clear what to do with the potential flood of metrics (you can turn as many on or off as you choose). At what point does additional left hip sway become problematic? How much is normal human variance? And how do I even know which swing to label as My Ultimate Swing?
Finally, I need to acknowledge one of my longstanding issues with filming the golf swing: consistency. Given how minute all these measurements claim to be, it’s critical that your camera set up be perfectly consistent from one session to another. Perhaps that’s possible if you have a practice station at home but not if you’re bringing your tripod to the range.
Overall, I think there are a lot of interesting things within My Ultimate Swing, but I’m skeptical that it’s going to help the average golfer improve their skills.
Longevity
The longevity grade for My Ultimate Swing depends completely on the type of golfer using it. For the vast majority of golfers, I think this has very little longevity. However, for the committed swing filmer, I think the longevity is tremendous for the way that it organizes videos and allows you to compare swings over time.
Value
My Ultimate Swing is free to download. The Premium subscription costs $4.99 per month or $52 per year. With Premium, you get “side-by-side video analysis, advanced motion tracking, and detailed performance metrics.” If you only want a place to store your swings, the free version is fine, but otherwise you will need to pay for Premium. For golfers who like video analysis, I think a month of Premium is a very low cost trial, but I don’t think it provides strong value for the average golfer. [See Price / Buy]
Conclusion
I really like the concept behind My Ultimate Swing. Recreational golfers should not be trying to copy the swing of their favorite Tour pro. The idea of “Master your swing – not someone else’s” is exactly right. Unfortunately, this app is not instructive or user friendly enough to recommend to most players. [See Price / Buy]
Every golfer has experienced a perfect swing — balanced, effortless, and powerful.
But repeating that swing consistently is difficult.
