The MGI Ai Navigator Halo electric caddie offers a smooth user experience with a great remote control.  GPS display isn’t a strength, but the hazard avoidance system is a positive, unique feature.

Introduction

While electric caddies may still be a fairly new thing for many golfers, MGI is a company with a long history in this space.  Founded in 1993, they have a full line of electric golf carts, spanning a huge range of prices and features.  The new MGI Ai Navigator Halo represents the very top of their line and is one of the most expensive electric caddies available.  I tested it to find out if the user experience justifies the price tag.

Size & Set-Up

Fully unboxed, the MGI Ai Navigator Halo comes with everything you see above.  It’s a lot of parts, but assembly is remarkably easy.  The two large wheels connect to the cart without tools, though it is important to get them into the right position (more on this later).  MGI does recommend using the included axel lube during assembly and once each month.

The charger can power up both the cart’s battery and the remote control at the same time.  The best feature is that it displays the battery’s power level, so you don’t have to guess how much juice is in it.  Sliding the battery into the Ai Navigator Halo is easy and intuitive.

You should first power up the MGI Ai Navigator Halo at home as it will need several minutes to update.  You’ll also need to register your cart to take full advantage of its feature.

With the battery installed, the MGI Ai Navigator Halo weighs just over 33 pounds.  The folded dimensions are 27″ X 15″ X 14″.  The size is in the same ballpark as the Motocaddy M5 that I reviewed recently [find it HERE], but it weighs about eight pounds more. [See Price / Buy]

Storage & Accessories

Ranging in price from $30 to $200, the MGI Ai Navigator Halo is not short on accessory options.  For storage, there’s a cooler/storage bag, drink holder, phone holder, scorecard holder, and a multi-purpose clip for a towel or jacket.  Of course there’s an umbrella holder and an umbrella extender for very tall golfers.  Courteous golfers can enjoy the sand bottle holder or the sand bucket holder…or both.  There’s an attachable seat for dealing with slow rounds, and rain and travel covers for keeping your electric caddie safe.

The MGI Ai Navigator Halo comes with an umbrella holder, drink holder, and the best device mount I’ve seen yet.  All of these install on the cart’s two accessory ports either by clipping on or getting screwed in.  Either way, installation takes a minute or less.  There is no built-in storage on this cart, but, as I’ve rhetorically asked before, do you really need on-cart storage if you’re using a cart bag?

On Course Performance

Let’s start with the most premium feature on the MGI Ai Navigator Halo: the remote control.  With the multi-functional remote, you can go through the entire round without ever putting your hands on the cart.  It gives you control of the direction and speed of the cart from up to 200 meters away.  I also appreciate that the remote is paired with the cart right out of the box, no additional set up necessary.

Overall, I was very impressed with the function of the remote control.  The cart was very responsive, and the directional controls were smooth.  There are 20 levels of speed control, so finding an appropriate pace is never an issue whether you’re a tortoise or a hare.  I’ll add that MGI’s Gyroscope Straight Tracker Technology is very impressive.  I played in sloppy conditions on a rolling course, and the Ai Navigator Halo stayed on line without me having to watch its every move.

While the remote control works really well, the bigger question is, “Do you need a remote controlled electric caddie?”  My conclusion is that it’s not objectively better or worse, it’s just different.

With the MGI Ai Navigator Halo, you get to choose your default “takeoff speed,” but it’s limited to level 10.  This is a little too slow for me.  I preferred using the remote so I didn’t have to wait for the cart to get up to my preferred speed.  Additionally, there’s a lot to be said for walking totally upright, hands completely off the cart.  You do need to keep an eye on the cart, and the remote is another piece of gear to manage, but that tradeoff might be well worth it for some players.

Turning to the more basic functions, I think the MGI Ai Navigator Halo delivers a really strong user experience.  It folds and unfolds with two motions, and it stays “together” when folded for easier loading and unloading.  The anti-tip wheels are highly effective, and the “all terrain tread” rear wheels lived up to their name in tall, muddy grass.  I also like the fact that the lower bag loop is permanently “closed” for a more secure hold.

One easily-overlooked feature of the MGI Ai Navigator Halo that I really appreciate is the ability to make it into a conventional push cart.  The rear wheels can be installed in Drive or Free Wheel Position.  In Drive, the cart needs battery power to move forward; in Free Wheel you can push it freely.  While no one would choose this as their push cart – it’s too heavy – it’s nice to know you won’t ever get stranded because you forgot to charge the battery.

Returning to premium features, the MGI Ai Navigator Halo sports a built-in GPS system.  It has a 3.5″ X 2″ color touchscreen and 40,000 courses in its system.  While the yardages are accurate and update quickly, the screen is quite small and does not provide an overview of the hole.  You can “scroll” back from the green to see different parts of the hole, but this is not as useful as a complete overview.  The system does have shot measurement and a scorecard, but, overall, I found the GPS system disappointing given the price and how good this cart is overall.

The GPS system does power one of the coolest features on the Ai Navigator Halo: hazard avoidance.  Dubbed “Geo Protect,” this feature uses the GPS system to identify bunkers and water hazards and slow or stop your cart as it nears them.  The owner’s manual is full of disclaimers about how you are still responsible for your cart, but I found that the system worked as advertised and was a good safeguard against distraction.

Finally, MGI claims a 36 hole battery life for the Ai Navigator Halo.  In my testing, I saw an average battery usage of 15% for 9 holes, meaning the 36 hole claim is actually a bit conservative.  I play quickly and on courses without dramatic elevation changes, so your mileage may vary.  The cart also comes with a three year warranty. Conclusion

Priced at $2,599, the MGI Ai Navigator Halo is one of the more premium options in the electric caddie space.  It justifies this price with an outstanding remote control and a smooth user experience.  There are even two “mystery” buttons on the remote that hint at upgraded features still to come.  If you want to walk the course with ease, this is one of the best ways to do it.
