Dixie Red Hills Golf Course

50 Words or Less

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course is one of four city golf courses in St. George, Utah.   An enjoyable, affordable 9-hole track.  Greens have tons of character.  The kind of course every town should have.

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course Review review

Introduction

St. George, Utah is one of the fastest-growing golf destinations in the United States, and it’s easy to see why.  Getting there is straightforward – an easy two hour drive from Las Vegas – the weather is fantastic, and the natural beauty is jaw dropping.  What’s more, much of the golf is affordable.  The city of St. George maintains four municipal courses, and the subject of this review, Dixie Red Hills Golf Course, packs in more great views and fun shots per dollar than any course I’ve played.

Practice Facilities

Walking out of the clubhouse at Dixie Red Hills Golf Course, you’ll find the first of two putting greens.  The one nearer the clubhouse is medium in size, comfortable for no more than four golfers.  A larger putting green is situated a level below the first tee.

There’s also a driving range with about eight hitting mats and grass to hit from.  The range is limited – shots past 235 yards are prohibited – and there are no nets.  It’s situated among the triangle of closing holes, so you need to be careful about your shots leaving the range…and shots from the course entering the range.

Customer Service & Amenities

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course has a medium-sized clubhouse that covers all the essentials.  There’s a surprisingly large amount of logo gear, a wide array of golf balls, and a handful of clubs.  The vibe is casual and loose – golfers are called to the first tee via a loudspeaker.

This is a fairly short course, and, as such, the majority of golfers walk.  In fact, depending on the time of year, there are no riding carts at all.  Rental push carts were in high demand, so the traveling golfer should bring a bag they don’t mind carrying.

As a tourist, my favorite “amenities” were the local golfers we met.  We played with Mat and Jason who offered great dining recommendations and commentary on the area courses.  If you want to really know a place, you need to talk to the locals, and the locals play here.

Visiting the Greater Zion Area – Activities

The golf in Greater Zion is outstanding, but if you skip all the other things to do in this area, you’re missing out.  That starts with the Zion National Park, one of my personal top two.  The park is just thirty minutes from St. George, and it’s one of the most approachable national parks I’ve visited.  From the Springdale entrance a shuttle takes you to numerous trail heads, so you can enjoy a short walk or a full day excursion.  I’d also strongly recommend renting an e-bike and riding through the park.

This area’s parks go far beyond the namesake.  We visited the Petrified Dunes at Snow Canyon State Park, located within minutes of The Ledges.  Other state parks include Sand Hollow, Quail Creek, and Gunlock, and they offer activities ranging from boating, kayaking, camping, ATVing, and, of course, hiking.

If you want to pair your golf with more restful activities, you can start by planning some stargazing.  Zion is a certified Dark Sky Park.  If you’re from an urban area, you’re going to see things in the night sky that you’ve never imagined.  There are also festivals, theaters, and much more.  Check out the Greater Zion website HERE for a comprehensive listing.

Beauty & Scenery

I have never seen a course that gets close to Dixie Red Hills Golf Course on the “Dollars to Views” ratio.  For $27, you get nine holes of red rock mountain views.  The contrast between the rocks and the lush greens of the course is spectacular.

What really impressed me about the beauty of this course is the feeling of isolation.  It’s located right off a fairly major road, but with the exception of hole #8, you never see it.  In fact, you barely see houses or anything other than golf course and nature.  I give St. George a standing ovation for keeping a course this beautiful this affordable.

Tee Shots

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course is not a bombers playground.  At par 34, it measures 2,733 yards from the back tees and 2,127 from the front tees.  There’s just one par 5, and the longest par 4 is 389 yards.  Two of the par 4s are barely over 300 yards from the back tees.

That lack of length doesn’t mean this is an easy course to dominate off the tee.  The fairways are all below average in width, and there’s only one hole that’s straight.  You’ll find plenty of trouble if you hit it sideways, and the doglegs range from gentle bends to full 90 degree turns.

What’s more, this is not a course where you can mindlessly lay up off every tee.  The 9th hole, for example, requires an accurate shot in the range of 200 yards just to get a clean look at the green.  Dixie Red Hills Golf Course does offer a couple chances to make full driver swings, but it’s really built to favor the accurate, thinking golfer.

Approach Shots

If you achieved your goal off the tee, your shot into the green will be straightforward.  There is some movement in the fairways at Dixie Red Hills Golf Course, but nothing that will stop you from flag hunting.  Similarly, some shots play slightly uphill, but it’s unlikely you’ll need a whole extra club to compensate.

Things get more interesting if your tee shot gets wayward.  The rough is moderate – more thick than tall – but it can cause issues if you get unlucky.  If you get further off course, you’ll be hitting from rocky desert lies, assuming you can find the ball.

The biggest obstacles are the trees.  The tree lines are light, allowing you windows to play through.  If you have strong control of your shot shape and trajectory, you can turn poor tee shots into GIRs.  Of course, taking on risky approach shots can also turn bogeys into triples.

Greens & Surrounds

The greens are the star of the show at Dixie Red Hills Golf Course.  Starting with speed and condition, they’re far better than anyone should expect from a $27 course.  They’re fast enough that the undulations matter, but not so fast that their target customer won’t be able to roll a few in.  Similarly, they’re receptive to approach shots and pitches without being mushy, pockmarked dartboards.

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course Review review

With the exception of a couple tiered greens, you won’t find exaggerated undulations here, but every green at Dixie Red Hills Golf Course has character.  Subtle shoulders, false fronts, and ridges ask you to carefully evaluate every putt.  Your scoring is likely to be dictated in some measure by the pin positions: there are some really nasty spots on some of these greens.

If you miss the green, Dixie Red Hills Golf Course gives you ample opportunity to get up and down.  The surrounds are a mix of a short collar cut and the same medium-thick rough seen in the fairways.  No matter your preferred short game style, you can have success here.  Finally, the bunkers are almost uniformly shallow, requiring just a touch of elevation to escape.

Overall Design

The best single word for Dixie Red Hills Golf Course is one I’ve taken from my dad: sporty.  This isn’t a big, bruising course, nor is it overdone or tricked out.  But it’s not boring or easy, either.

Dixie Red Hills Golf Course is exactly the kind of course I’d like to play as my regular track: you have chances to hit every club in your bag and when you find some trouble (which you will), you’ll have a chance to play a fun recovery.  And when you reconvene with your group on the green, everyone will have a reasonable chance to make a putt and walk away feeling good.

Conclusion

I’ll end where I started: every town should have a Dixie Red Hills Golf Course.  While the natural beauty makes it something truly special, this course would get my strongest approval without it.  This is a fun track that players of all ages can enjoy, and golfers of all budgets can afford.  If you’re a local, I’m jealous.  If you’re traveling here, make this part of your itinerary.
