The Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador putter makes a powerful first impression with its industrial looking fang shape, shiny milled face, multi-colored grip, and premium presentation in the bag. Accurate inside 12 feet, but a tinny sound, hard feel, and weak-long distance speed control don’t match its stout appearance.
Introduction
In the bag or behind the ball, the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador looks like a heavyweight ready to deliver an easy knockout blow. The large, sharp angles of the fang-style mallet head are muscular and intimidating, and the shiny milled face adds to its character.
Everything about The Ambassador screams heavy, stable performance, easy speed on longer putts, with a soft deep feel. What I found was more complicated. While the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador has superb presentation and strong short-range capabilities, its tinny sound and weak long-distance performance contrast with its powerful appearance.
Looks
If Mad Max golfed, this would be his putter. The Standard Finish (shown here, also available in Black) stainless steel fang-style mallet is big and beefy with sharp angles making it look more like a medieval weapon than a precision instrument. Its shape is similar to the Bettinardi BB 6.0 [review HERE] but as if it’s been prepared for battle. For early 2000’s hip-hop fans, picture MF Doom’s iconic mask attached to a shaft.
That burly look is amplified by the ~3.5” x 1.5” chrome sole insert, with large Detroit Putter Co. branding and Ambassador Bridge imagery. Rivets in each corner secure the insert adding to The Ambassador’s rugged, armored appearance. The shiny milled face, with DPC branding stamped on its heel, infuses an unexpected flashy side to the design.
At address, the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador remains bold and uncomplicated. The head has a wide 3.75” x 3.25” footprint with long, subtly ridged fangs that frame the ball and provide a stable look. A thin black line in the middle is a useful aiming device leaving the top of the face untouched. Black Detroit Putter Co. branding is embossed on the back of the face. Nothing about the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador appears delicate. It’s heavy visually and literally.
Even the pistol-style grip enhances the look of the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador with its contrasting color blocking. The grip is offered in eight different colorways that add personality and make it feel custom.
White & Black Dancing Mitten is the standard headcover colorway protecting the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador, but it is available in seven colors. Many of the colorways align with Michigan college and professional sports teams. Detroit Putter Co. branding in all caps wraps the heel area of the headcover. The state of Michigan is embroidered throughout the soft, leather-feeling cover that’s much more premium than the magnetic cover on the Tour Edge Zero T ZT-3 Putter [review HERE]. With a large Detroit Putter Co. “D” logo on the strap, there’s no ambiguity who the manufacturer is. [See Price / Buy]
Sound & Feel
Looking like an armored tank, I rolled my first putts on the practice green with the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador excited for the soft, deep, and smooth tone I was sure to hear at impact. However, The Ambassador’s 431 stainless steel construction and “DPC signature milled face,” created a higher-pitch and sharper tone at impact than the 303 stainless steel in my gamer. Although it looks like it should sound heavy and deep, the sharp, bright, metallic tone of the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador doesn’t match its appearance.
Given the higher tone, harder steel, and relatively shallow face milling, rolling putts with the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador felt sharp and quick rather than soft and solid like the Bettinardi BB 7.0 [review HERE]. On direct center strikes, there’s a more muted feel, but toe-side contact was harsh and heel-side contact even firmer.
Performance
With its 3.25” fangs, 375 gram head, F2.5 swingweight (as tested), slight toe hang, and burly appearance, the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador looks built for stability and easy speed. However, in testing, The Ambassador was better on shorter putts where feedback and alignment mattered most, while it lacked the speed and power its solid look suggested.
The sharp sound and firm feel of the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador was an asset on putts inside 12 feet. I instantly felt the quality of the strike and had an improved sense of control on putts where it was imperative to hit the start line correctly. The firm feel made it easy to identify strike location, so The Ambassador was helpful on the practice green as I worked on stroke accuracy.

Longer putts, especially uphill, proved more challenging. While I expected the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador to blast the ball uphill, I was surprised how much effort was required to get the ball to the hole. As I worked to dial-in distance control on lag putts, I had to keep adding extra power which made my stroke less natural and the speed challenging to control. I was alternating between too long and too short and began “guessing” rather than “feeling.”
The double bend shaft (also available in a plumber’s neck) has a .600” butt end diameter delivering a stable feel through impact. The shaft positioned The Ambassador naturally at address, making it easy to get my hands and posture into a repeatable setup.
The pistol-style grip, similar to a SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol 1.0 [review HERE], fit my hands well, giving me a good sense of face position throughout the stroke. A minor drawback is the headcover’s overpowered magnetic closure grabbed The Ambassador every time I took off or replaced the cover. [See Price / Buy]
Conclusion
There’s a lot to like when looking at the Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador. A bold armored appearance, aggressive fang-style, shiny DPC signature milled face, and selectable grip and headcover colors give The Ambassador a distinctive, custom, and powerful look.
On the green, performance didn’t match the look. The Detroit Putter Co. The Ambassador was accurate inside 12 feet where firm feedback and clean alignment helped with control, but the tinny sound, harsh feel on mishits, and weak long-distance performance were impossible to ignore. Golfers who want a distinctive Michigan-made, face-milled mallet with strong short-range control should give The Ambassador a look. For a soft, powerful, forgiving putter, golfers should look elsewhere. [See Price / Buy]

The Detroit putters are super cool looking, lobe the options on grips and headcovers. Would like to see an alignment mark on top of putter head. I need all the help I need.

If you use Sasho Mackenzie’s heads up putting method does it really matter what flat stick you have in your hands? I find myself more tension free.
My lag putting is better. And I’ve been making more 5 to 10 footers and I ever have before.

Initially I didn’t care for fang-style putters, but now they are my preferred shape/design. I like the appearance of this putter, but not of its grip. I want a more understated look; I would re-grip this putter. To me, performance is what matters most. I immediately would be turned off by a tinny sound and harsh feel.. Also, long-distance accuracy and performance are key factors in evaluating putters for my game.
