The Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge performs beautifully.  A compact head, unique sole, high spin, and a low price point.

Introduction

I have been playing great golf this year, but my wedge game has been in need of a refresh, as it has been the weakest part of my game.  I’ve tested out new and old wedges, but nothing has quite clicked.  In my search for better wedge play, I was excited to test the Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge.

The Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge has a compact shape, which I immediately was a fan of.  The feel was firmer than usual, but the performance around the green really stood out, and I immediately became a fan.  The $119 price point is a pleasant surprise, and should help bring these wedges into the conversation for a wide variety of players.

Looks

The first thing I noticed about the Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge is the size of the club face at address. It has a small face, which I have not seen before in a wedge.  The toe of the club is very round, and the highest point of the toe is relatively close to the center of the club.  The wedge has a “triple chrome” finish that looks beautiful.  The back of the club is very shiny, and the address has a more muted chrome look to it.

The Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge comes in three different bounce variations. The high bounce option appears to have the narrowest sole of the three. The low bounce version has a wider sole, and the mid bounce falls right in between the two.

In the bag, the back of the club has clean, minimal branding.  It has the word Exotics, as well as the TE logo on the toe of the club.  The sole of the club shows the loft, the bounce, and “MB,” “LB,” or “HB,” depending if it is the mid, low or high bounce option.  I think it’s a bit redundant to list the bounce degree, as well as if it’s low or high bounce.  All of these numbers and letters make the sole look busier than it needs to be. Sound & Feel

The Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge is made by what Tour Edge calls “Precision CNC-milling.”  This gives the wedge a different feel than the forged wedges I am used to.

On center strikes, the wedge has a solid, firm feel and a crisp sound.  As contact gets away from the center the feel and sound get more high pitched and clicky.  Going from forged wedges to the milled Tour Edge Exotics felt like the difference from going from a soft golf ball to a ball with higher compression.

It feels like the sweet spot is quite small.  In my testing I hit a lot of shots that ended up with good results that felt like mishits.  Around the green this took some getting used to.  As I would open the face, and hit shots off of different lies, the feel at impact would tend to be clicky and harsh.  The same shot with forged wedges would have a softer and more dead feeling.

Performance

Around the green the Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge has very high spin.  I experimented with a variety of shots over many different lies.  The ball consistently checked up and stopped faster than the forged wedge I was using before.  The high spin rate holds up on medium and full swing shots.

The technology related to the spin is the CNC-milled SuperSpin grooves, new groove geometry, and increased groove volume across the face.  The performance of this wedge should stand up against any wedge out there due to how high the spin is on short and mid range shots.  The fact that they are milled instead of forged gives the club a harder feel, but what is lost in the feel is made up for with the performance gains of higher spin.

The compact head shape came in handy as I navigated the different challenges of the short game.  The wedge felt like a precision instrument, and it was easy to finesse different trajectories around the green.

The most notable update in the engineering of the wedge is the TriGrind Sole. This is a three part sole design that includes a “chamfered leading edge.”  In case, like me, you are unfamiliar with the word “chamfered,” it means a 90 degree edge cut down at 45 degrees.  The club also includes heavy trailing edge relief.  These two edges combined with a flat middle section give the sole of the club a very narrow and rounded appearance.

The Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge comes in low, medium and high bounce variations.  I tested one of each for this review.  My favorite was the high bounce 56 degree wedge. It has 14 degrees of bounce, which is a higher bounce than I have ever had before.  In the high bounce variation, the Tri-Grind sole is very narrow.  This is an unusual combination, as many manufacturers have big, wide soles in their high bounce wedges.  The narrow sole helped me find clean contact in tricky lies without ever worrying about the club digging.

The low bounce 60 degree has a wider sole than the high bounce wedge.  The low bounce was great on really tight lies, and I was able to hit soft, delicate shots to short sided pins.  The mid bounce felt pretty standard in the 52 degree wedge for me.  I mostly hit three quarter and full shots with the 52, and it performed well.

On full shots, the Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedge performed very solidly.  Paired with the KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 wedge shaft, it had a medium trajectory.  I was easily able to take a few yards off, or flight it lower when needed.

Finally, the Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedges have a durable triple chrome finish that helps preserve groove integrity over time.  After testing the wedges for a few weeks, the faces of the wedges have shown surprisingly little wear. [See Price / Buy]

Conclusion

The Tour Edge Exotics Milled wedges come in at a low price, and instead of copying others, they offer something unique.  The milling provides excellent spin.  The bounce variations and sole design give an option for everyone.  The compact head shape helps the wedge perform like a precision instrument.   Personally, the combination of the head shape, and the high bounce narrow sole have made me like this wedge more and more each time I put it in play.
