Par X Design puts a tasteful artisan touch on golf-themed artwork. Featuring both interesting graphic design and/or gorgeous photography, their huge assortment of wall art has something for everyone at a reasonable price. They don’t want to offer people the same old thing and are better for it.
Introduction
There is a ton of golf decor available out there. Lots of golf decorations seem fun but are only really suited to a sports bar or pro shop. I’m sure plenty of us have spotted something that made us smile for a moment only to instantly dismiss it for one reason or another. It is quite common that even the most devout golf fiends have little to no golf decorations in their homes. Good luck getting the green light with a non-golfer spouse making the final call on wall art for the bedroom or living room.
Par X Design may just be the perfect solution. With a unique assortment of photography and eclectic graphic designs, they offer framed artwork that might be more interesting and universally suited for your home or office interior.
Origin of Par X Design
Rather than relying on also-ran stock imagery, aerial photography or course map offerings, Par X Design works on a collaborative photography and design model. They largely feature emerging photographers and graphic designers whose work reflects how they see golf.
Par X Design’s mission is to share individual views of the beauty golf can deliver, not simply check boxes using the same traditional list of course shots that everyone else sells. The goal is to define how modern golf looks, feels and lives, both on and beyond the course. Styles
Immediately upon arrival at the Par X Design website, there are pages and pages of choices in the shop to browse through and choose from. From the looks of it, a bit more than half of the options are stunning photography and the remaining are a mix of very cool graphic design art. Either way, everything is tasteful, well done and has a uniqueness that is refreshing.
The photography is mostly golf course shots, but very few of them are the typical shots or angles you usually see in golf photography. Many of these catch your eye because they are beautiful and interesting shots of nature, with the golf element sometimes emerging as secondary. Some are abstract or unique angles of what would otherwise be a traditional golf photo.
In addition to the nature shots, Par X Design has a lot of golf art that is a different type of beautiful. Some of my favorite options really don’t feature golf course shots at all. For example, Do Not Lean, features a very used golf bag and clubs that are resting against the seat of a subway car. The whole shot feels worn, broken in and has a sense of being real, not staged. The heavily used glove drying on the side of the bag can tell you a story of its owner on their way back into the city after a long round.
Some other options don’t technically showcase golf at all, but perhaps feature just a silhouette of palm trees against the desert sky, or a deep view across a ravine splitting a fairway. Personally, I prefer stuff like this to a traditional approach. There is no shortage of straight-on shots of a green with a water feature in front taken from the fairway as is on every scorecard ever made. To me, the personal touch and sharp eye Par X Design has for creative imagery results in a more immersive and moving experience.
When it was time to choose my piece, I was actually in the middle of a road trip through Northern California and Southern Oregon with my wife, in the middle of the redwood forests. It was pretty hard to not land on Among the Giants, a wide-angle photo of a large undulating green complex. The green is absolutely surrounded and dwarfed by a wall of beautiful redwood trees behind it. The shot was captured at Northwood Golf Club in Northern California by a photographer named Sebastian Giudice. Now every time I look at this gorgeous photo I wish I were golfing on the west coast but also remember my spectacular vacation.
Buying Process
The Par X Design website was pretty easy to navigate and browse. This was mostly due to their use of large thumbnail/preview images in the shop section and was very appreciated. It allowed me to comb through the various offerings without needing to click on each one to get a better look and then back out to see the assortment again. Sounds like a little thing, but it was a great experience when shopping for artwork.
Once I settled on my image, the product page had an easy-to-use size and frame selector that had a live preview on the left showing my current selections. Again, this may not seem like a big deal but the Par X Design website’s reactive product page confirming what I was choosing was great and satisfying. It immediately made me think of how often this feature is overlooked and can be frustrating when absent.
After my Par X Design order was done, my framed photo print arrived well packaged and protected. My day job is a packaging engineer, so I actually was quite excited to see the boxing solution that was made for framed artwork. They did a good job.
Upon opening, the print quality and resolution of the photograph and resulting print was genuinely spectacular. Nearly any photos I’ve ever seen that are over 20 inches in any dimension start breaking up and getting a bit fuzzy looking up close. My rather large 36” wide print of Among the Giants from Par X Design is crisp and clean even with my nose up to the glass. You can see how close up you can be in the photo with the coin and how crisp and detailed the image is even at a macro level.
The combination of quality in/quality out on display here is remarkable and Par X Design clearly puts a lot of thought into the end result here starting with quality photography and ending with good paper and high end printing.
Value
Framed art can get expensive fast, and I found the Par X Design pricing reasonable. The cost of my Among the Giants print (sans frame) starts out at just $45 for the smallest of four sizes (16” x 8”) and could be ordered in a frame for as low as $75. My order was one of the larger options at 36” x 18” and in a frame came to $255. That is a lot more than the smaller size costs, but in terms of size/materials/shipping and handling of a large fragile item, this is a relative bargain for framed artwork.
I must say that to achieve this price point, the materials used were a tad on the lighter side. The advertised solid wood frame on my example exhibited a minor amount of bowing along the top when hanging.
It must be said that I am the only one of a few of us at Plugged In Golf who have noticed this happen and came as a shock to the others who also have framed pieces from Par X Design. I believe it has a lot to do with the rather extreme wide and flat proportions of my particular order, and not a reflection on all Par X Design frames. Ultimately once it was on the wall, the curve to the upper frame piece is not really an issue and not noticeable. I can feel the minor flex if I handle it to re-adjust, etc, but it is far from a deal breaker.
Perhaps this could be solved with heftier materials, but that would also inflate the cost. I think Par X Design is in a pretty good sweet spot, value-wise. [See Price / Buy]
Conclusion
I don’t want to cloud my individual frame experience too much – I barely notice anything off about it, and day after day I absolutely love seeing the finished product in my office. Even without visiting the actual golf course, looking at the beautiful scene shown in Among the Giants fills me with memories of my trip to the redwoods. It also makes me want to fly across the country to play a round of golf at this course in a big way.
I will likely return to Par X Design to buy another piece or two in the future. Their combination of beautiful imagery and print quality at a solid price are hard to beat. They are a great choice for lovers of the game whether it’s an office, your home, or anywhere great taste resides. [See Price / Buy]
