The Payntr Reserve Classic RS golf shoe combines premium looks, feel, and performance. An incredibly impressive offering from a true disruptor in the golf footwear space.
Introduction
Payntr launched its first shoe in 2021. A USA-based company, it is focused on viewing golf shoes as equipment designed to provide golfers with performance advantages. Its co-founder and president has three decades of experience in the golf footwear space, so there’s a lot of accumulated knowledge going into the products.
This was my first opportunity to test a Payntr shoe, and from what I’d heard from Matt about his experience with them, I was excited to do so. The Payntr Reserve Classic RS is a spiked golf shoe with a traditional look packed with modern performance elements. For this review, John and I both received pairs to test and compare our experience.
Looks
Out of the box, the Payntr Reserve Classic RS golf shoe isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. It is immediately reminiscent of the classic “dress shoe” style of golf shoe made famous by FootJoy. John said it reminded him of the FootJoy Premiere Series (review HERE) with a few distinctly modern touches, and I agree.
Red and navy eyelets, contrasting aglets on the ends of the laces, clear sole section allowing the PMXSpeed PLT plate to be visible, contrasting and raised TPU logo on the sole, and the mock leather welt fusing the upper with the midsole all differentiate the Payntr Reserve Classic RS from a shoe that could be mistaken for a formal dress shoe. I think it strikes a great balance between traditional and modern, doing its own thing without trying to make too big of a statement.
Payntr’s branding is very attractive, with a simple yet recognizable X logo placed at the top of the outsole. The Payntr Reserve Classic RS is available in three colorways: Gray/Black/Blaze (pictured here), White/Black/Blaze, and Black/Steel Gray/Blaze.

Comfort
If the looks diverged from the traditional “dress shoe” silhouette in a modest way, the comfort takes that differentiation up a level. Frankly, I could never get comfortable walking the golf course in a pair of those “classic” shoes. As great as they look, I could not keep the blisters at bay long enough to break them in. Lacing up the Payntr Reserve Classic RS, it became clear right away that this was going to be a different story. The leather of the upper was supple and pliable right away. The foot feels comfortably locked in by the soft microfiber upper material.
John and I agreed that there was no break-in period whatsoever on the Payntr Reserve Classic RS or RS Tour. The footbed is soft without being pillowy. It provides a subtle bounce walking down the fairway without losing contact with the feeling of the ground. The heel portion is soft and supportive, with no digging or discomfort.
Our experience around sizing was not completely aligned. John mentioned that he felt the sizing was a bit larger than his pair of Payntr X 001 F (review HERE) and that he would go down half a size next time. I found the regular width in my typical size to be very comfortable and to fit true to size. Both versions are available in regular and wide widths.
Performance
I have played some of the best golf of my life since switching to the Payntr Reserve Classic RS. Now, let’s not confuse correlation with causation. I’m not attributing my play to the switch, but I do think that the shoes are supporting the way I want to play and helping me feel confident and comfortable over the ball and between shots.
John mentioned that his home course has small berms throughout the rough areas so there are numerous small uphill/downhill/sidehill lies faced each round. The TPU outsole with Fast Twist insert system kept his feet stable and grounded in those situations much more than his usual X 001 F gamers. He added that he felt the PMXSpeed PLT propulsion plate made him feel super connected to the ground (his top priority in a golf shoe).
This harnessing of the ground force is a huge focus for Payntr and something the founders have stated they believe is a differentiator for them. Without any knowledge of physics or product design, I have to trust my experience to help me make a judgment call about this or any other technology claims an OEM is making. In this case, I find it compelling. As mentioned above, my ball striking has been on point while wearing the Payntr Reserve Classic RS, and it legitimately feels like ground force is being harnessed with less effort than with some shoes I have worn in the past.
There is an extent to which comfort and performance are linked when it comes to golf shoes. As I alluded to above, if my heels are bleeding, there’s a slim chance I’m going to play my best golf. John and I both thought that the Payntr Reserve Classic RS performed exceptionally well with regard to waterproofing (dew sweeping is life for me these days) and in keeping the feet from getting too hot despite the substantial upper material and 80 plus degree temperatures. Conclusion
I texted Matt after my first round wearing the Payntr Reserve Classic RS and proclaimed myself a convert. John was already gaming Payntr golf shoes before this review but was similarly impressed. For a new company to emerge in the golf footwear space and produce such a high quality offering is very impressive. I look forward to trying more from them in the future and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to any golfer looking to try some new footwear. [See Price / Buy]
