Unlike golf clubs, golf bags don’t rely on big leaps of technological advancement over time. No ball speed, no AI. Their quality lies in their functionality and their longevity. They either perform their functions easily and reliably or they don’t. They either last for many years or they break down in key areas quicker than they should. That’s why Sun Mountain decided to utilize the exceptionally durable ballistic nylon material for the latest iteration of its Matchplay stand bag. Featuring eight purposeful pockets and available in 4 or 14-way top, the Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic golf bag is meant to function at a high level for years to come.
Looks
The Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic golf bag has a modern, monochromatic look, with the fabric of the body, as well as the handles and other details all maintaining the same color. I tested the classic black, but it is also available in steel gray, navy, a nice deep green, and a beautiful wine red color that is sold out at the time of writing. The Sun Mountain branding is super minimal, with the only adornment being a small ‘SM’ coupled with its subtle circle+triangle logo. I’m not sure when Sun Mountain rebranded, but the new look is very clean, modern, and attractive.
Taking a closer look at the materials, it definitely has a rugged appearance, owing to the ballistic nylon and its textured, somewhat rough hand feel. Other materials also look heavy duty, including the leather strips covering the zippers of the two large side pockets, the soft cushioned material on the top divider and on the part that rests against your back while carrying, and the zippers themselves. Features
The Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic golf bag is very much a no frills bag. That’s not to say it doesn’t have features, it definitely does. Its features are just presented in a utilitarian manner. The configuration of pockets is pretty much what you have come to expect from a modern golf bag, so you won’t have to think too hard about what goes where.
There’s a large front pocket for balls and other items, an insulated beverage pocket, as well as a large side pocket that can hold larger items like a jacket and rain pants. The material lining the Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic’s valuables pocket and magnetic closure rangefinder pocket (Sun Mountain calls it “snow fur”) is soft enough to keep your things from getting scratched but doesn’t have a particularly soft or luxurious hand feel.
The ballistic nylon material itself is one of the Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic’s most notable features. It’s a heavy, dense material that was originally created for military use. Sun Mountain has given it a polyurethane coating to aid in water resistance. Given durability as a core function of a golf bag, the material is the number one factor in how long a golf bag holds up. The material is the most durable feeling I have experienced on a golf bag. Only time will tell, but the Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic certainly seems likely to hold up to a lot of wear and tear.
The Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic golf bag is available with either four-way and 14-way divider. This is obviously a personal preference but golfers tend to be pretty particular about this (Team Four-Way all the way!) so it’s nice that Sun Mountain has provided both as options.
Performance
Quick nightmare scenario for you: you’ve spent a bunch of time researching your new golf bag purchase. You made your choice and paid good money for it. It arrives on your porch and you spend the evening loading it up with your clubs and gear, feeling like a kid on Christmas looking forward to your round the next day. You get to the course and every time you go to retrieve a club, it feels like there’s a tiny gremlin at the bottom of the bag yanking on the butt end of the grip. Incredibly frustrating.
It only takes an experience like this for a seemingly perfect golf bag to feel like a big waste of time and money. Thankfully, the Sun Mountain Ballistic Matchplay golf bag has no such issues. Retrieving clubs from the four way top is as quick and easy as you could reasonably hope (with apologies to the other team, I can’t comment on the 14-way top). My gamer set up only has 13 clubs, so I even added an extra club during my testing for all you full-baggers to make sure it wouldn’t make a difference. All good.
The other key aspect of golf bag performance is transport. How easy is it to get from here to there, whether it’s from the car to the course or from hole to hole. First of all, deploying the Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic’s stand is easy when applying just a moderate amount of force. The legs feel sturdy and can easily be secured with the small section of bungee.
The dual strap system is comfortable and easy to adjust. Much like the lining of the pockets, the material isn’t the softest, but I see no reason why that would cause it to be deficient in its purpose. Empty, the Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic weighs in at 5.4 lbs. This puts it in the middle of the spectrum, especially given the heavyweight nature of its material [want to go lighter? The Sun Mountain Matchplay Ballistic stand bag isn’t one of the most luxe golf bags on the market. There’s no touch of leather or chrome.
