2019 Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14-Way Bag Review

50 Words or Less

The 2019 Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14-Way stand bag offers individual, full length dividers in a midsize golf bag.  Outstanding design that’s both comfortable for carrying and cart friendly.

Introduction

I’ve been using the 2016 Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14-Way for over two years now and still consider it “a gem”.  Other than a little fading on the yellow nylon strapping and a bit of fray at the cart strap pass-through, the bag is still in great shape.  That didn’t stop me from jumping at the chance to try out the 2019 version.

Style

The Sun Mountain 4.5 LS is a midsize stand bag that fills the gap between minimalist carry bags and full size cart bags.  One of three versions offered, the 14-Way’s only distinguishing feature is the namesake top.

2019 brings 8 new, mostly conservative color choices highlighted by a groovy desert camo.  Branding remains large, but not dominant.  As readers have commented in the past, the Sun Mountain logo doesn’t associate the owner with specific club brands.

Features

Transferring all my clubs and accessories to the new 2019 Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14-Way, I was able to examine every aspect of the bag against the previous model and noted only four differences.  The top is about a ¼” narrower with slightly different shaping, and its handle is notably wider.  The hip and shoulder padding has a new channel construction with wonderful feel.  Finally, there’s one extra webbing loop next to the plastic D ring – a simple but welcome addition for towels, course badges, or a homemade glove lasso.

The Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14-Way has 9 pockets, including my favorite, the velour lined, water resistant black triangle near the top.  Not only does it keep my phone and cash dry, but with the cart strap pass through, it’s always quickly accessible.  The E-Z Fit Dual Strap System is true to its name and features super comfortable padding.  And of course the individual, full length dividers make this bag a popular choice when evaluating carry bags.

Performance

For me, performance starts with evaluating the bag’s objectives.  The objectives for a midsize stand bag are that it stores nicely in my trunk, is easy to get on and off my shoulders, sits well on a golf cart, and has legs that work effortlessly.  The Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14-Way checks all those boxes.

The new design of the top handle makes transitioning in and out of my trunk even more of a breeze.  In the hundreds of times I’ve engaged the legs on my 2016 model, I’ve never experienced the slightest hiccup, and I’m completely confident I’ll be able to report the same with this 2019 model in a few years.

It only took a couple of minutes to adjust the straps for a well balanced carry position.  I love how Sun Mountain positioned the water bottle slot at an angle for easy access while carrying the bag, yet keeping the bottle upright when the bag is in stand mode.  Clubs slide effortlessly in and out of the slots.

Conclusion

There’s something comforting in the familiar, and the 2019 Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14-Way made changing to a new golf bag effortless.  All my gear is comfortably stowed and the fresh color has me invigorated.  Time to state it again: with its high quality materials and well executed design, the Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14-Way is truly the perfect bag for me.

  1. I bought one a couple months ago and it is perfect. Everything you say about this bag is right-on, Matt. This bag is especially suited for golfers who like to keep it organized, but hassel-free.

  2. I would agree that the new 4.5 14 way bag is an improvement over the last models that I’ve had. However the large garment pocket is smaller than previous versions, to allow for the separate waterproof pocket, and doens’t hold nearly enough when stuffed with extra rain gear, etc. I do like the arrangement of the pockets overall and the extra inner pockets/ dividers and the larger grip at the top as well. My only complaints are the thin fabric used (isn’t as durable in my opinion especially in the dividers which my cord grips are already started to pull) and the legs assembly. I really wish SM would make their legs, and especially the operating mechanism, better as they almost always stay open when you pick up the bag (they should quickly shut – I’m always reaching back to close the legs). Overall a very good bag, probably the best 14 way, and I’m hoping it lasts a few years too.

I have a trusty old C-130 that I love it would be nice to have a carry bag as well. I also agree with the golfers that don’t want a club makers logo on their bag. I play a mixed bag and don’t really want anybodies name on my golf bag.
Sunmountain make some of the best bags in golf.

I don’t like the 14 way top to a stand bag would rather have a 5 way top on a stand bag. I would not buy this because of that reason
