The Spoiler Golf OG Putter is designed to put a better roll on the ball when putting. It offers feedback over forgiveness to help people learn to putt better.

Introduction

I’ve had the privilege of attending a few clinics by short game guru Stan Utley. Utley is the best putter of the golf ball I’ve ever seen because of how he can get the ball to roll. It looks like the ball starts rolling end over end immediately, and this seems to make it hold its line significantly better than average. In my testing of zero torque putters, I’ve been impressed with how they start the ball on line but unimpressed with the roll they put on the ball. No matter how hard I try, I can never get them to roll like Stan Utley.

I was eager to try the Spoiler Golf OG Putter as they market it as being “built for pure roll – a roll that starts cleaner, holds its line more consistently, and helps you control distance with greater confidence.” The way a putter rolls the ball has been missing from the larger putting conversation over the past few years, so I am intrigued by the direction Spoiler Golf OG Putter is headed.

Looks

The Spoiler Golf OG putter came about when the founder noticed the ball rolled better when he putted with a wedge than with his normal putter. The putter is branded on the bottom and side with the words “Lead Edge Roll.” Perhaps this is because the face of the putter looks more like the leading edge of a wedge than it does an actual putter face. The face of the putter is incredibly skinny, about ¼ of an inch from top to bottom.

At address, the top of the face of the putter is only ⅝ of an inch off the ground. This is extremely low to the ground, much lower than the average putter. The top of the front edge of a LAB OZ.1 is about 1” off the ground. A golf ball is 1.68”, so this putter sits below the equator of the golf ball. It feels like I could chip the ball up in the air if I wanted to.

From address the Spoiler Golf OG putter looks like they added a spoiler to the back of a double wide blade putter, transforming it into a mid-mallet “D” shape. The spoiler creates a rectangle sized cut out in the back half of the putter. There are two finishes available: silver and black.

In the bag, the Spoiler Golf OG Putter comes with a simple white head cover with a magnetic enclosure. The bottom of the club fits the automobile-inspired persona with various screws, cut-outs, grooves, and straight edges. [See Price / Buy]

Sound & Feel

The Spoiler Golf OG Putter has a firm feel, and produces a medium pitched “tock” on impact. The feel of the putter did not change much on heel or toe strikes. Spoiler Golf argues that “feedback” is better than “forgiveness,” and the feedback is primarily shown by what the ball is doing immediately off the face of the club. If you mishit a long putt, the ball will literally start bouncing, providing immediate feedback. If you couldn’t see the ball bouncing, and had to judge the feedback only by what you felt, you would have a tough time distinguishing between a center strike and a mishit.

Performance

Spoiler Golf promises that their putters create an earlier forward roll and offer precision feedback. They say that if you notice the ball bouncing on longer putts, be patient and your stroke will adjust to it.

For me, the Spoiler Golf OG putter put a great roll on the ball at medium and short range right out of the box. Rather than simply hitting my line, the ball appeared to really hug its line right from the start and hold its line for the duration of the putt.

As I moved to longer putts, I noticed the ball bouncing occasionally, as predicted. The bouncing was due to me making contact with the ball below the equator, something that was easy to do because the putter sits so low to the ground. I didn’t have an issue with this on shorter putts, but as the stroke got longer, it was harder to make perfect contact. I went back to the putter on five separate practice sessions to see if I was able to improve my stroke and become better at putting. Still, one or two out of every ten putts would bounce more than usual.

Interestingly, I didn’t notice a major lack of distance on these putts which was very surprising. I thought a bouncing putt would kill me and lead to an automatic three-putt, but this was not the case. With more practice, I think I could eliminate the bouncing putts, which in theory would make me a better putter. In the meantime, since the mishits don’t lose much distance, I just have to get over the jarring feeling of seeing a ball bounce occasionally on the long putts.

Spoiler Golf appears to be the first company fighting against forgiveness and offering feedback instead. They believe if you have a club that offers the right amount of feedback, you will learn and become a better player. I have found this to be true in my own game. When I play with hickory clubs, my swing improves as I’m not able to overpower them the same way I can with steel shafts. It’s like the hickories teach me how to swing them.

I experienced a similar sensation with the Spoiler Golf OG Putter. The more time I spent with the putter, the more intentional I became with my stroke. I couldn’t just walk up and mindlessly hit the putt. I had to be intentional about rolling the ball and where I was striking the ball.

After spending enough time to get used to the putter, I put it to the test against my gamer on a launch monitor to see if the roll was better than my preferred putter. The Spoiler Golf OG putter produced similar results to my gamer when it came to Skid Distance and Roll Percentage. My gamer putter had a Skid Distance of 23” and the Spoiler OG was 24”. The Roll Percentage for both putters was 90%. I am a scratch golfer, and I consider my putting to be better than my handicap, so I am happy with the numbers that both putters produced. Conclusion

On good putts, the Spoiler Golf OG Putter produces great roll that will hold up against any putter out there. On poor putts, the ball starts bouncing, and you can quickly tell what you need to do differently next time. Spoiler Golf writes that over time you will learn to be a better putter by using their putter.

I could see this being a very interesting option for someone who could benefit from putting a better roll on their putts or for someone who has never considered the impact roll can have. On solid strikes, the Spoiler Golf OG putter puts a great roll on it every time. It’s impossible to make a solid strike and not get a good roll.

My favorite thing about the Spoiler Golf OG putter, and Spoiler Golf in general, is their emphasis on the importance of roll in putting. All of the talk lately is about keeping the ball on line. I’ve seen lots of players with zero-torque putters who seem to hit their lines, but the quality of the roll is just not there, and they don’t make as many putts as they could.
