The Golf Pride Reverse Taper Small putter grips make novel shapes and proportions available to players who prefer a smaller grip. Great options for players who use non-traditional hand placements such as the claw.
Introduction
Last year, Golf Pride introduced golfers to their Reverse Taper putter grips [review HERE]. Since their release, the Reverse Taper has become the fastest-selling putter grips in the game. To make Reverse Taper available to even more golfers, Golf Pride has expanded the line to include a new Small size. I tested each of the three shapes – Round, Pistol, and Flat – to see how the smaller size pairs with the non-traditional shape.

Look
In Small, Medium, or Large, the Golf Pride Reverse Taper putter grips have the same look, sharing the black, white, and red color scheme. The design draws attention to the reverse taper with a thin ribbon of white expanding to the full width of the grip near the bottom. A large, black “Golf Pride” stands out on that white background. There are five red stripes around the middle of the grip which could be used to guide hand placement, depending on your grip style. Overall, the sharp contrast between the black and white make the Reverse Taper eye catching despite not having a lot of busy graphics.

Feel
The common elements among the three Golf Pride Reverse Taper Small putter grips are the dimpled texture and the light tack. This combination gives the golfer a secure hold on their putter without having to put too much tension in their hands.
Something I noted in the larger Reverse Taper grips is the way that the polyurethane material muted the feel of impact. With the new Small sizes, that effect is reduced. While not the same as a thin, traditional Pingman grip, the Reverse Taper Small putter grips transmit more of the impact sensation to your hands, which suits my preferences.

Performance
As a longtime user of pistol-style putter grips, I was most excited to test the Golf Pride Reverse Taper Small Pistol. I recalled enjoying this grip in the medium and large sizes, but I found them too big. What I discovered is that the namesake feature of the Reverse Taper Pistol grip makes it unlike any other I’ve used.
As you can see above, the Pistol’s signature curve or “pistol kick” is present and quite pronounced. The grip feels securely locked into the upper hand. What’s hard to perceive in the photo is how dramatic the difference is between the upper and lower segments. The large, flat lower portion almost makes the Pistol feel like it has two separate pieces that are perpendicular to each other. While this might sound jarring – and it did feel unusual at first – the results were quite good. The size hits a sweet spot, filling my hands without feeling clumsy or bulky.
In the new Small size, the Reverse Taper Round and Flat are much more similar to each other. In fact, the lower halves are almost identical. The upper half of the Flat fits the name – it feels almost rectangular – while the upper portion of the Round has a very minimal flat surface. While neither of these shapes resonated with my preferences, I still appreciated how they allowed my lower hand to relax and “ride along” comfortably.

I’ll also note, as I did in my review of the larger Reverse Taper grips, that these putter grips are outstanding for players who use non-traditional hand placements. Players who use a claw or pencil grip will have much more to hold on to with their lower hand thanks to the bigger overall size and the large, flat top.
Finally, I found some unexpected numbers when I looked through the weight specs for the Golf Pride Reverse Taper Small putter grips. In the Round, the weight difference from Large to Small is less than two grams (63 to 61.4). The Pistol, in contrast, has a significant disparity between the Small at 52.1 grams and both the Medium and Large at 64 grams. The Flat is somewhere in between with the Small weighing 56.6 grams, the Medium at 61, and the Large at 62.

Conclusion
If you’re intrigued by putter grips with non-traditional shapes but don’t want to dive into jumbo sizes, the Golf Pride Reverse Taper Small putter grips are perfect for you. This is exactly the camp I find myself in, which is why the Pistol has a spot on one of the putters in my rotation.

Play a large pistol with my Scotty 11.5 and play a left hand low grip. Love the reverse taper.
Glad to see Golf Pride release these. I liked the original Pistol, but they were too big, killed my feel.
