The Dirty Pants Problem
Now the CEO of a major golf brand, Anand Nalla is a golfer first. And in 2019, he was a golfer with a problem: dirty pants.
While practicing on the range, he wanted to clean his club between shots. He clipped a towel to his belt loop, but the wet turf quickly soaked his towel…and his pants. The solution he wanted – a towel with a built-in magnet – seems obvious in retrospect, but it didn’t exist in 2019.
Iteration
If launching a new product was as easy as having an idea, more people would do it. Creating the Ghost Golf Magnetic Towel that we know today required elbow grease.
According to Anand, the first prototype was no more than a towel with a magnet stitched into it. While it did offer some proof of concept, it revealed a new problem: the need for a stronger magnet. But, of course, the stronger magnet created a new issue. The stronger magnet banged into the clubs and cart, something no golfer wants, so Anand went to work on a rubberized housing. This is one of the key elements that distinguishes Ghost Golf’s towel today.
With the magnetic aspect solved, Anand went to work creating the best possible towel. He ultimately chose a microfiber with a deep waffle weave. This offers the combination of durability, absorption, and cleaning ability that all golf towels strive for.
After a year of prototypes, the Ghost Golf magnetic towel was launched in 2020 and became an immediate sensation. Demand outpaced supply as other golfers saw Anand’s solution and immediately saw how it could help them. [See Price / Buy]
Imitation
If you throw the term “Magnetic Golf Towel” into Google, you’ll quickly see that Ghost Golf is not alone in this space. My search returned a host of “Sponsored Products” – none of them from Ghost Golf. The brand says they have seen over fifty companies introduce some form of a magnetic towel since they launched in 2020.
As a golfer, I like competition. I’ve said it repeatedly about the launch monitor category: more competition has driven the cost down dramatically while improving the quality, accuracy, and features available.
As a business owner, however, I’d like to see more innovation and less imitation. When you’re going so far as to put the same word (“greenside”) in your product name and using the same logo and magnet placement, you’re not bringing anything new to the party, you’re just ripping someone off.
What Makes Ghost Golf’s Magnetic Towel Better?
Personally, I try to support companies that innovate. I like to buy from the original creator, when possible. But some people just want to buy the best golf towel. Is the Ghost Golf magnetic towel still that? I’ve been testing a number of towels lately, and my answer is, “Yes.”
Most of that comes down to the quality of the material. The microfiber is heavier and more durable feeling than many other towels, and the waffle weave digs out dirt without much effort. For those that like a wet towel, this towel holds its water throughout the round so every shot can be hit with a pristine club.
Beyond the towel, the neodymium magnets are strong enough to hold the towel up, even when it’s wet. The included carabiner is metal and has a snappy spring. Ghost Golf also includes a metal butt cap (above) to put in your putter grip so that you can grab your towel without having it splash on your flat stick.
Ultimately, this is still a towel, but everything about the user experience is a little bit better than what you get from other brands. [See Price / Buy]
Expansion & Innovation
As we all know, in 2026 Ghost Golf is much more than a towel brand. I know them best for their excellent golf bags [review of the Any Day HERE]. They have a full apparel line, gloves, hats, and more. Their towel collection has also expanded from the original Greenside Towel. There’s a caddie-sized version of the magnetic towel as well as “Tour Towels” in numerous sizes that eschew the magnet.
In 2027, Ghost Golf will be launching a new golf bag platform called LT-3 alongside a luggage collection.
