Introduction
Sun Mountain is no stranger to the golf industry. They’ve been curating some of the most popular golf bags for over 45 years. While they are continually innovating new ways to improve the modern golf bag, their latest design is an ode to early century renditions of a carry bag that used canvas as its primary material. Sun Mountain drew on its motto, Trust, Quality, and Reliability (or TQR), as inspiration for its latest creation – the TQR Waxed Canvas stand bag. I received one of the first Sun Mountain TQR stand bags in navy, natural, and red to put through the full gamut of testing.
Looks
As soon as I got the new Sun Mountain TQR stand bag in my hands, the design immediately gave me American heritage vibes. The canvas material is mixed with some natural leather touches that give off a premium style that I instantly fell in love with. The natural earth tones and high end material makes it look like an expensive family heirloom that has been passed down over generations.
While I tested the navy, natural, and red version, Sun Mountain offers the TQR waxed canvas bag in five other color combos – black, black and red, green, brown, and navy. No matter which color you chose, the branding is minimal with only “Sun Mountain” listed above the carry handle and along one of legs. There are also a few traces of the brand’s circle and triangle logo sprinkled throughout the bag. [See Price / Buy]
Features
Once you get past the canvas and unique styling of the Sun Mountain TQR stand bag, you will realize this has very similar features to most modern golf bags. There are seven pockets that cover just about every storage need while on the course.
On the back, there is a magnetic, felt lined rangefinder pocket that uses a leather grab handle for easy access while playing. Just below is a zippered ball storage compartment with a fully removable front panel for custom embroidery if desired.
On the left, the insulated drink pocket can fit a larger water bottle and lays flat when not in use. On the other side, Sun Mountain has a large apparel pocket with a small felt lined valuables storage area just above it for a phone, keys, or sunglasses.
Right on the front of the bag, Sun Mountain added a deep-but-thin pocket that runs about half the length of the bag that holds the end of an umbrella. It even has two button straps that keep it secured whether you’re on a cart or carrying with sketchy weather.
Each Sun Mountain TQR stand bag also comes with a nylon rain cover and the double shoulder strap. For those that prefer a single strap, Sun Mountain offers a waxed canvas version for an extra $30 on their site.
Performance
The Sun Mountain TQR stand bag has four full length dividers which fit all 14 clubs comfortably. The interior dividers are made of nylon commonly found on golf bag exteriors. These, however are more rigid than expected, providing better separation between clubs and particularly useful for players who use oversized grips. Having four clubs in two of the slots at all times did create some issues with grips catching but not often enough that it became an problem.
Even with a full bag of clubs, each divider is protected by a soft nylon at the top preventing any damage to the shafts or shorter club heads.
Carrying the Sun Mountain TQR stand bag around the course was painless, and it felt lighter than I anticipated. Although the waxed canvas material increases the weight of the bag to a moderate 5.8 pounds, it felt closer to a lightweight style. I credit a lot of this feel to the wide and well padded shoulder straps. At its widest point, each strap is about the heel to toe length of an iron head with dense foam that is comfortable enough to use on both shoulders or just one.
There are three other handles that help with transport. The top handle is made of a durable plastic that juts out from the top dividers. I typically use this in conjunction with the finger slip under the ball pocket for lifting the bag in and out of my car. The third is the main padded grab handle which is easy to grab and has a solid balance point to prevent tipping forward and dumping clubs everywhere.
Setting the bag down, the hinged base needs very little pressure to kick out the legs, which are slightly thicker and more durable than most stand bags. There is nothing worse than having to jam your bag into the ground to get the legs to kick out. The Sun Mountain TQR stand bag performed this perfectly every time.
Even when not using the stand legs, the base is stable enough to keep upright when needed on a range or around a green. The hinged base and legs system feels durable enough to last multiple seasons without issue. Sun Mountain also warranties its bags to be free of defects for up to one year from the date of purchase. The Sun Mountain TQR stand bag is a true stand out among golf bag design. The waxed canvas offers a unique aesthetic with a retro style that I think players will love. The moderately weighted bag, durable stand design and seven pocket storage capacity provides everything a player would need in a bag.
