Greensboro, North Carolina – Cameron Young cruises to a six stroke lead to clinch his first PGA Tour victory as the 2025 Wyndham Champion. Cameron posted a bogey free 62 on Friday to vault himself to the top of the leaderboard after just 36 holes. Young never relinquished the lead as he coasted to claim his first win.
This week’s tournament is the last chance for most players to get into the top 70 to advance to the FedEx Cup playoffs and win a potential share of the $100 million prize pool. Two players who were right on the cusp of the top 70 were UGA product Chris Kirk and Australian Karl Vilips. Karl not only posted four rounds in the 60s, but he also aced the par three third hole in his final round which jumped him up 10 spots into the top 15 players. He finished in a tie for 19th. Kirk also put together a solid week after posting rounds of 66 and 65 on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Kirk’s bogey free final round of 68 pushed him into a tie for fifth finish. More importantly, both Karl and Kirk played well enough to jump into the top 70 players and advance to the first playoff tournament next week in Memphis.
Despite his poor track record, this week’s tournament was Cameron Young’s for the taking for most of the weekend. The only real competition was who would finish second. Longtime journeyman and Colorado native Marc Hubbard put up a solid week and despite a final round of seven under 63, he finished tied for third. Columbian born Nico Echavarria who won his first event in January at the Sony Open posted three solid rounds this week but a few untimely double bogeys in his final round pushed him out of the top three and into a tie for 19th. PGA Tour rookie Mac Meissner also put himself atop the leaderboard with a final round 66 which was good enough for solo second.
This week was clearly all about Cameron Young. Many writers mentioned that Young’s previous record of seven second place finishes was the most without a win since 1983. That record is now broken with his five shot victory at Sedgefield Country Club this week. This win also vaulted him 24 places in the FedEx Cup standings and into the top 30 for the playoffs.
Next week, the playoffs begin in Memphis at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
