2025 Truist Championship Recap

Sepp Straka Wins 2025 Truist Championship

Philadelphia, PA – Sepp Straka (-16) won the 2025 Truist Championship, the final tune up before the PGA Championship.  He beat out Shane Lowry and Justin Thomas by 2 strokes.  This year’s edition of the tournament was hosted at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon course, giving golf fans a rare opportunity to see the world’s best play on a golden age design.  It was Straka’s second victory of the season and fourth PGA Tour win of his career.

Straka entered the final round tied with Lowry and three strokes clear of Justin Thomas and Keith Mitchell.  Thomas was able to vault himself up into a tie for second after a round of 67.  Lowry wasn’t able to keep pace with Straka.  He settled for a 70 and was visibly disappointed after carding two bogeys in the last three holes, including the 18th where a birdie would have given him a chance of a playoff.

Finishing two strokes behind Thomas and Lowry in T4 were Jacob Bridgeman, Tommy Fleetwood, and Patrick Cantlay.  All three players carded rounds of 65 on Sunday to improve their positions and gain confidence heading into next week’s major.

Other players who had notable performances included Max Homa (T30, -5), whose game appears to be waking from its long slumber; Rory McIlroy (T7, -10), who has the second shortest odds next week at Quail Hollow; and Collin Morikawa (T17, -7), who many would say continues to underachieve relative to his abilities.

A signature event, the field was loaded with the best players on the PGA Tour.  Scottie Scheffler was the only notable absentee as he prepares to make a run at next week’s major.  Not all of the field’s top players had confidence-building weeks, however.  While this was a no cut event, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, and Will Zalatoris were among the big names languishing near the bottom of the board.

Players who did not make it into the field for the Truist competed at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic.  New Zealander and big hitter Ryan Fox triumphed in a playoff over Mackenzie Hughes and Harry Higgs.  The win is his first on the PGA Tour and represents a huge accomplishment for a bona fide tour pro.

Next week the PGA Tour heads to a familiar venue, Quail Hollow, for the PGA Championship.  Justin Thomas won his first major there in 2017 and has been rounding into form as of late.  He’ll take on a field that includes the best players on the PGA Tour in addition to LIV’s big names of Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Brooks Koepka.
