Looks
I have to agree with Matt Saternus in his review of the Exotics Max fairway [read it HERE]. The first thing I noticed looking at the head of the Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway was the size – it’s big. The head is long, and the face is wide. The second eye-catching aspect of the head is the metal framework that surrounds the carbon fiber crown. It’s a design I’ve seen before in drivers but not in a fairway wood.
In the bag, the headcover has a clean, modern look. I like the new “TE” branding, as well as the black woven pattern down the center framed by silver stitching.
The sole of the Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway is rather simple – in a good way. The fine grey lines segmentations offer some visual appeal against the black raised sections. And before leaving this section, it’s worth noting the overall low profile of the club. [See Price / Buy]
Sound & Feel
With any reasonable strike, the Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway produced a crisp, metallic ‘thwack.’ I had to really push towards the edges of the face to produce a muddled sound. I fully expected a boisterous sound based on the head size, but the volume was actually moderate.
Feel mirrored the sound in that it was consistent. Extremely stable, the Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway lacked much tactile feedback. And while some players might find that a negative, I believe maintaining positive thoughts can be an asset for the target golfers.
Performance
For those readers looking for the traditional performance chart to begin this section, the decision was made to not include it because the Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway I tested was a 5 wood. I will tell you the performance was solid and aligned nicely with the prescribed Fitting Profile found on the Tour Edge website: mid-high trajectory, mid-level spin, and a definite draw bias.
The draw bias of the Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway stems from two design elements: offset hosel and heel side weighting. Those two features are intended to counter the effects of an outside to inside swing – better known as a slice. For my normal swing, the design can have the opposite effect – a hook, which is exactly what happened. By adjusting my grip slightly, I was able to counter the setup and instantly had balls flying straight down the range.
The lighter weight build of the Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway made swinging the club feel effortless. Maintaining a good tempo, I felt like I could add a little more speed through impact. That’s also when the forgiveness really shined. I found myself wanting to hit ball after ball to continue the experience of seeing them fly over my target.
The larger head profile and steel Ridgeback frame certainly factor into a high MOI, forgiving design, but some accolades have to be directed to the Pyramid Face Technology. That technology may not be visible looking at the face, but I’ve seen the computer graphics of the results, and the ability to maintain ball speeds across the face is impressive. [See Price / Buy]
Conclusion
The Tour Edge logo may be new, but the brand’s identity remains the same: quality and performance at a reasonable price. The Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway checks all those boxes. For golfers with slower swing speeds who fight a slice, the Tour Edge Exotics Lite fairway can make a great addition to their bag. It’s refreshing to know Tour Edge doesn’t ignore the needs of golfers with less than tour swing speeds – and swings. [See Price / Buy]
