Bonobos Golf 2020 Apparel Review

50 Words or Less

Fit options headline Bonbobos Golf 2020 apparel.  Golf-centric details and performance fabrics integrated into contemporary styles.

Introduction

Why does Bonobos have a dedicated golf apparel line?  This statement from their website says it all:  “Golf clothes aren’t just Polo Shirts and Chinos. That might work for putt putt (which is fine)… But if you’re trying to max out your potential, every factor counts.”  And while fabrics and fit are key elements in the performance of Bonobos Golf apparel, style is always in the equation.

Style

To get a visual of the Bonobos Golf style, look no further than PGA star Justin Rose.  Whether he’s wearing a vibrant print or a classic solid polo, Justin always looks sharp.  And part of his crisp look is the flat front Highland Tour Golf Pants that come in eight versatile colors.

Although probably not tour approved, I love the whimsical cocktails on the Navy Spritz polo.  The woven Clubhouse Stretch Belt is a great complement to the contemporary style of the tops and bottoms.

Fit

In all the apparel brands I’ve reviewed over the years, Bonobos stands out as the brand that offers golfers the most fit options.  Taking top prize for fit choices is the Highland Tour Golf Pants with four cuts (tailored, slim, athletic and straight), even and odd waist sizes, and five lengths.  The Bonobos website does a great job illustrating the various fit offerings, and I found the tailored fit to be exactly as depicted – and quite flattering if I do say so myself.

The Lightweight Golf Shorts only come in one cut, but they are available in both 8” and 10” length.  Through the seat and thighs, the shorts had a somewhat tailored, athletic fit.  Delighted that Bonobos offered a 33” waist, I found the fit ideal.  At 5’-10”, the 10” length came to the top of my knee.

Both the Performance Golf Polo and M-Flex Golf Polo come in slim and standard fits.  In my typical medium size, the M-Flex in the slim fit was form following without being tight or restrictive with the sleeves coming to mid bicep.  The Green Palm Parade Performance Golf Polo was more of an athletic cut in the slim fit.  In standard fit, the Navy Spritz Performance Golf Polo had room through the torso.  The sleeves of both Performance Golf Polos also came to mid bicep, but the loose fit created a bit of a disconnect with the look.

Performance

Regardless of which polo I wore, performance was never an issue.  All shared an 88% polyester/12% elastomer fabric blend that had wonderful stretch.  For enhanced range of motion, Bonobos designers created stretch panels on the back of the M-Flex Golf Polo as seen in the photo above.  They also moved the shoulder seam forward – a plus If you carry your golf bag.

The Highland Tour Golf Pants are again the category standout with numerous details that enhance performance beyond the 4-way stretch fabric with water repellent finish.  The locking snap and gripper gel waistband shown above kept the pants secure and shirts in place.  Embroidered eyelets for keeping your personal parts ventilated, plus “articulated back knee(s)” for unencumbered putt reading squats.  For those of you that really appreciate details, I’d be remiss in not mentioning the fabric utilized on the back pockets that keeps your scorecard safe from sweat.

I’ll blame the fact that it’s 95° outside for failing to mention the Playthrough Performance Golf Half Zip before now, but it deserves some recognition.  Not super heavy, but with some heft to the fabric, the pullover provides quick warmth, and the tall collar is sure to keep out cold breezes this winter.  Although listed as a slim fit, the cut is perfect for layering over a polo without feeling confining.  Another tip of the hat to the Bonobos designers for the well positioned zippered side pocket.

Conclusion

“Get fit” is a mantra of Plugged In Golf when it comes to golf clubs, and Bonobos seems to have the same mentality when it comes to golf apparel.  Fit choices in both tops and bottoms give golfers options whether it’s based on their body shape or style preference.  Integrated into all 2020 Bonobos Golf apparel are wonderful performance fabrics and golf-centric details.

I buy Bonobos and their fit is great . I will say that most guys do not like to wear roses on their shirts so I think this line of clothing will bomb. I bought a couple of cool pair of pants a while back and they seem to have gotten away from this. I like their shorts and hope they put out some unique designs.

Over the last two years I have bought several pairs of shorts, pants, and shirts and have been really pleased with fit and performance. Only wish they had a little more selection in the solids such as red, orange, yellow, green.

I wear a medium slim shirt. What size pullover do you think would be right? medium or large?

I’d stick with medium in the pullover if you’re just wearing a polo underneath.

Thanks for reading and commenting Jim.
