Golf, with Better Commentary

With all the talk of rolling back the ball and emerging golf club technologies with crazy-sounding names like “Jailbreak” and “Twist Face,” it can be easy to start thinking that golf is a whole new game. The truth is that for most of us, we’re playing the same old game we always have, regardless of what’s in the bag.
One thing that really has changed about golf is the way we consume it as entertainment. The internet has opened a massive amount of doors in that regard, including the ability to re-watch classic golf on YouTube, watch early round coverage on PGA Tour Live, and to digest podcasts on any number of golf topics.
Perhaps my favorite addition to the experience of watching golf on the weekends is Twitter. The commentary, comedy, and depth of knowledge of the people that Twitter provides access to enhances the experience of watching the regular tournament broadcast. I’ve put together a list of my favorite follows on Twitter.
@ClubProGuy Even if his days dominating the Mexican mini tours were before your time, you’ll still get a kick out of this parody account. From teaching followers how to master the elusive punch-out shot to sending congratulatory notes to winners ala Arnold Palmer, it’s always a good time. Just don’t break the 90-degree rule or you’ll be hearing from @BevinsDarrel.
@KylePorterCBS Kyle Porter is a writer for CBS Sports. He tweets fairly frequently and tends to amplify high quality content, enter into conversations with other journos, and share his even keel takes on the big players, tournaments, and stories in golf. Recommended for an insightful media perspective.
@NoLayingUp The guys involved in No Laying Up are arguably driving the change in golf media more than anyone else. After becoming notable for their candid podcasts with pro golfers, Ryder cup captains, and Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay, they are expanding their output. Follow for spicy takes and #TourSauce.
@the_fried_egg If you are an architecture buff or a fantasy player, the fried egg and its thrice-weekly newsletter and regular podcast were made for you. This is the place where you can learn about architecture from the likes of Tom Doak and Bill Coore or get a lead on a dark horse for the weekend. Highly recommended for those looking to go deeper into the game.
@PepperellEddie Eddie Pepperell is a European Tour pro and probably the most honest voice out there. Love them or hate them, he consistently fires off hot takes about the pro game and/or his love affair with wine, or global politics, and he readily interacts with all comers. Mr. Pepperell is firmly in the “must-follow” category.
@PGATour This one might be a little bit more obvious, but I think it’s worth mentioning that the PGA Tour is doing a good job with their digital media, particularly on Twitter, where they share timely highlights, shots of the week, and retweets from various tour players.
@PluggedInGolf Of course, you’re already following us, right?! If for some reason you aren’t, what are you waiting for? We regularly post giveaways, reviews of the hottest new clubs, gear, and apparel, our podcast with golf industry insiders, and more.
@z_blair Zac Blair is a PGA Tour player, architecture geek, and founder of The Buck Club. He posts to his Twitter account often, sharing photos of wherever the Tour is that week, as well as tales from the road like the time Jack Nicklaus mistook him for an unattended child in the locker room at Muirfield Village.
@Skratch Skratch is a digital media company that focuses on the lighter side of golf. They create funny videos of club drops, #WhiffWednesdays, vintage Tiger highlights, and a whole lot more. Follow if you like to laugh.
@TwoInchesShort This is another account that takes a humorous approach to covering the world of professional golf while also being relatable to the frustrations of the average weekend golfer. Tweets call attention to bizarre stories from the world of golf or just point out something you may have missed.
Give these accounts a follow and see if they don’t enhance your enjoyment of the golf this weekend.
