Introduction

In just one season, johnnie-O has become one of my favorite apparel brands.  The clothing just has a simple vibe, perfect for our increasingly casual society.  All summer long, I found myself reaching for one of the soft cotton polos from my Spring ’17 review to wear after a long, hot day on the golf course.  And even though temperatures are starting to drop, golfers still need performance, which is why I was excited to test some of the Fall ’17 gear from johnnie-O.

Performance

All the tops featured in this review are part of the golf collection and feature what johnnie-O calls PREP-FORMANCE.  The 90+% polyester fabrics are blended with spandex for a great combination of moisture wicking and stretch.  All three polo styles performed very well during the rigors of golf in hot and humid central Florida.  The Sway ¼ zip pullover is an excellent next layer for adding a touch of warmth while still moving perspiration as needed.  I also foresee utilizing it over a t-shirt for off the course exercising.

Style & Fit

There’s no better style description than johnnie-O’s own tag:  West Coast Prep.  The logo, a surfer standing by his board searching for the next big break, speaks volumes without a single word.  How do you make sure folks know these polos are designed for golf?  Give them names like Birdie, Eagle, and Mashie.  I’m a big fan of stripes like those in the Eagle, but somehow johnnie-O makes even solid colors look hip with crisp self-collars and contrasting piping around the side vents and neck.  The pique fabric and four button placket add marvelous visual appeal to the Mashie polo.

Speaking of shirt tails, I’m a traditionalist as far as golfing with your shirt tucked in, but the length of these polos works great either way.  The fit is athletic but not tight, and I found my normal medium choice to be just right.  Sleeves on the polos fall just past mid-bicep.  The Sway pullover is a snug fit, but in a good way in that it doesn’t interfere with your golf swing.  The sleeves are finished with a simple cuff that easily stretched when I wanted them moved up my forearm.

Conclusion

I’ve been seeing johnnie-O more and more lately in shops and on the backs of PGA pros – good signs of a growing brand.  With quality materials and wonderful color choices, johnnie-O is a great option for stylish performance on the links or in your other casual pursuits this fall.
