The Performance Golf SpeedTrac speed trainer offers unique adjustability for a speed trainer. Feels more like a real club so that speed gains put you closer to the hole, not farther OB.
Introduction
In the last twelve months, Performance Golf has had two massive hits: their RS1 putter [review HERE] and the 357 wood [review HERE]. Both are clubs designed to help golfers hit better shots and improve their scores.
The new Performance Golf SpeedTrac is tackling the problem of improved golf performance from the training side. This is a speed trainer with several novel elements. I tested one to see if these new features will help golfers bomb longer drives or if they’re just change for the sake of change.
Set Up & Ease of Use
When you unbox the Performance Golf SpeedTrac, you’ll find the training club and a small pouch with weights (above). There isn’t an instruction manual, but there’s a “10-Swing SpeedTrac Training System” that you can access online.
Putting the weights into the club is easy and fairly intuitive. I don’t think positioning the weight will be intuitive to most golfers – and I have some thoughts about Performance Golf’s recommendations – but the positioning of the weight is of secondary importance anyway. Effectiveness
Before diving into what makes the Performance Golf SpeedTrac unique, let’s get the basics out of the way. In the same way that we know with certainty that lifting weights will make you stronger, speed training will make you faster. If you use the SpeedTrac, you will gain speed. There are differing opinions about how much you need to train speed and the impact of different weights [learn more in Golf Myths Unplugged HERE], but no serious person doubts that speed training works.
Now, let’s work through the things that make the Performance Golf SpeedTrac different. First, this is a multi-weight system built into one stick. Unlike SuperSpeed [review HERE] – which requires three different clubs – SpeedTrac can is a trainer that’s lighter, heavier, or the same weight as your driver, all in one club. There are arguments for both options – changing weights takes some time, carrying multiple sticks is a hassle – but having access to four different weights (160, 195, 230, and 255 grams) is inarguably positive. The most obvious difference between Performance Golf SpeedTrac and SuperSpeed or RypStick [review HERE] is that SpeedTrac is shaped like a golf club (they call it a “Speed Spoon”) instead of a weight on the end of a shaft. This shape – plus the Y-Track weighting – positions the SpeedTrac’s center of gravity like that of a real driver. The purported benefit is that you will learn how to control the club face while gaining speed. [See Price / Buy]
Does this make sense? Absolutely. No one is interested in swinging faster so that they can hit it farther into the wrong fairway. However, SpeedTrac comes up short on feedback with regard to controlling the face. This is not a hittable trainer. Therefore you don’t know if the face was open, closed, or square at “impact.”
The Performance Golf SpeedTrac does have a molded training grip, which I think is great for two reasons. First, it keeps golfers from developing bad habits in speed training. The grip forces you to maintain proper hand position while going for maximum speed. Second, it provides a measure of the missing feedback on club face position. If you know your hands feel a certain way at address (presumably with the face square), you shouldn’t feel something wildly different at “impact.” Will golfers vary in their ability to sense this? Of course. Is this a perfect solution to the issue of club face feedback? No. But is it better than nothing? Definitely.
Finally, there’s the Y-Track weighting. This allows you to position the weight in the center of the face, the toe, or the heel. Performance Golf’s website seems to recommend using this like you would the adjustable weight on a driver: slicers should put the weight in the heel, hookers should put it in the toe. I can see the logic in this: it’s going to feel like your driver, and it might teach you the feeling of closing the face faster or slower. I think there’s value in doing the opposite, too. A slicer could put the weight in the toe to learn to exaggerate the feeling of closing the face. Either way, it’s an interesting, worthwhile addition.
Longevity
I would rate the Performance Golf SpeedTrac as equal to or better than any other speed training system for longevity. The fact that it’s just one club helps, because it’s more likely that you’ll leave it in your bag. Similarly, the Y-Track adds enough novelty that you might experiment a little more than you would with a normal speed trainer. Ultimately, this is like a piece of exercise equipment: using it isn’t inherently fun, but the results of using it are. [See Price / Buy]
Value
The Performance Golf SpeedTrac has a listed price of $299, but, at the time of this writing, is selling for $179.
This sale price puts the SpeedTrack $20 below both the SuperSpeed Speed Sticks Plus [review HERE] and the RypStick [review HERE], two of the best speed trainers I’ve tested.

When I first heard about the Performance Golf SpeedTrac, I was skeptical about whether golf needed another speed trainer.
