Introduction
One of the joys of being a part of the Plugged In Golf crew is learning about new brands and introducing them to our readers. When Alma Mater hit my radar, my first thought was “Nice looking shoes with your typical nubby outsoles.” Wow, was I wrong – not on the looks, but for certain on the “typical” front.
The outsole, along with the rest of the shoe build, has more design functionality than I recall seeing in any golf shoe. That became less surprising when I learned that the team behind Alma Mater are shoe industry experts sharing one vision: “innovation over convention.” I’ll dive into the technical features of the Alma Mater Beta Derby shortly, but let’s start with their looks.
Looks
Unboxing the Alma Mater Beta Derby shoes, I couldn’t quite get my brain around what I was seeing. Viewed from the side, the look was clean and highlighted by the tall, semi-translucent wraparound at the midsole. On the interior side, what captured my gaze was the segment of deep navy material at the arch and the ventilation holes above. Just above the holes, in tiny letters I found “for the love” embossed in the leather upper.
Flipping the Alma Mater Beta Derby over, the soles took on their own personalities. There was no missing the billboard size Alma Mater brand name seen through the outsole. And as I mentioned in the intro, the nubs are anything but typical – vast and varied, they look ready for serious traction. Overall, I love the polarity of the Beta Derby look. Comfort
As you can see from the photo above, I went with my normal 9.5 size in the Alma Mater Beta Derby. I included that photo because those tags are sewn into the insole and oddly prevalent inside the shoe. For the curious reader, quefairedemesdechets.fr is guidance on reducing waste in France. As I learned after fruitless scissor attempts, the best way to remove the tags is a firm rip. The stitching remains, but the tags split away cleanly.
As for the sizing – it was perfect. My heel and midfoot felt secure, while my toes had some room for spreading. The Alama Mater Beta Derby web page stated “(z)ero break-in that quickly forms into a more custom fit,” and I put that to the test by wearing them for a full eighteen right out of the box.
The leather uppers and calfskin interior linings did feel like they were molding to my feet as the holes progressed, but I quickly encountered an issue – a rub point on the outside of my right heel. I’ve experienced this with other shoes over the years, and it clearly has to do with the cut of the shoe. Unfortunately for me, the rub point never dissipated.
Putting my personal issue to the side, the Alma Mater Beta Derby were incredibly comfortable underfoot. Cushioning was slightly firm – more supportive than pillowy. A truly noteworthy feature of the shoe design was the flex I could feel down the center. It’s hard to see in the photo, but the nub height is lower down the center and sole truly flexes down from the perimeter, offering a springlike response with every step.
Performance
I want to stay on that last observation as the flex also plays into performance during the swing. Remember that tall semi-translucent wraparound? It’s designed to provide stability. The Alma Mater Beta Derby do a masterful job at providing stability for building and finishing the swing, as well as flexibility for transitioning through the swing. For me, those attributes add to power transfer and swing consistency.
Traction was excellent. After playing in the Beta Derby shoes, what I now see as I gaze down the photo above is the mouth of a shark, replete with multiple rows and various sizes of teeth. And the patterns of the multi-height hexagonal teeth tie right into the flex – a truly integrated performance system that adapts to swing dynamics and surface conditions. [See Price / Buy]
Conclusion
Alma Mater has more technical descriptions of the shoe build for the Beta Derby than I recall seeing from any brand. And it’s not just marketing hype; every detail lived up to the design intent. If it wasn’t for the single rub point I encountered, the Alma Mater Beta Derby would likely move to the front of my playing lineup. And that’s not even giving credit to how nice I found the looks.
