Introduction
In the world of golf equipment, longevity is so rare that it’s almost nonexistent. Every year, companies roll out new products and new names to generate fresh hype. The Diamana line is an exception. For the entirety of my golfing life, Diamana has been at the apex of performance for Tour players and recreational players alike.
As we close 2026, Mitsubishi is launching a full family of Diamana hybrid shafts to bring that legendary smooth feel and consistent performance to more parts of your bag. I tested what’s sure to be the most popular model, the Mitsubishi Diamana BB hybrid shaft, to see if it lives up to the name.
Looks
The latest generation of Diamana wood shafts brought along an aesthetic refresh. Old and new were artfully blended to create something that was recognizable as Diamana without being a retread. The new Mitsubishi Diamana BB hybrid shaft borrows that same look from the Diamana BB [review HERE] to create visual uniformity within the family.
Just below the grip, we get an expanded version of the classic flowerband graphic. The original is still there, in a subtle, darker grey, but the bright white flowers falling down the shaft are more attention-grabbing. Below that is arguably the best-known logo in the shaft world, the Diamana surfboard, followed by the model name, weight, and flex. All of this is set on matte black for a shaft that’s recognizable but not distracting. [See Price / Buy]
Feel
The Mitsubishi Diamana BB hybrid shaft delivered exactly the feel that I was expecting and hoping for. It’s solid in the handle and tip, more active in the middle, and smooth throughout. It doesn’t have the thunderous kick of the RB hybrid [review HERE], but there’s an obvious unloading of energy through the ball. Comparing the RB and BB in the same flex, the BB feels stiffer overall.
I was able to test the Diamana BB hybrid shaft in both Stiff and X flex at the same weight, 83 grams. While they had the same characteristics, there was an obvious difference. The X flex dials the kick down about 20%, and it asks for more effort. I’ll dive deep into whether this is good or bad in just a moment.
For reference, Mitsubishi describes their three Diamana hybrid shafts as follows, from butt to mid to tip. The scale is Soft to Medium to Firm. The Mitsubishi Diamana BB hybrid is Firm, Soft, Firm. Diamana RB is Medium+, Medium+, Soft+. Finally, Diamana WB is Medium, Firm, Firm.
Performance
Starting with the basics, the Mitsubishi Diamana BB hybrid shaft is the middle child of the Diamana family. All else equal, it’s going to produce a mid launch, mid spin ball flight – lower than RB, higher than WB. In my testing, I saw the BB flying somewhere between the RB and WB, but the gap between the three was not huge. As I said in my review of the RB, the shaft is not going to fundamentally change who you are as a golfer.
In testing the three Diamana hybrid shafts, what I found more important is how they reacted to – and promoted – different types of swings. The Diamana BB hybrid shaft is built for the middle of the bell curve, so it works well with a wide variety of swings. You don’t have to swing it hard, but it can handle an aggressive swing. The solid mid kick is a gentle reminder that you don’t need to go all out to get a great result.
Within the Mitsubishi Diamana BB hybrid shaft, I found a meaningful difference between the Stiff and X flexes. The Stiff flex pushed me toward a smoother swing, which I really enjoyed. The X flex asked for more effort, but it also produced better results when my swing got violent and out of sorts. At their best, both were excellent. The ball speed was high and consistent, and I felt comfortable working the ball in both directions. I haven’t decided yet which flex I’ll opt for, though I’m leaning toward the X flex for the insurance against my aggressive swing tendencies.
The Mitsubishi Diamana BB hybrid is available in five total configurations. At 83 grams, Mitsubishi offers Regular, Stiff, and X flex. Moving up to 93 grams, golfers can choose between Stiff and X flex. All five have .370 tip diameters, but there is notable variance in butt diameters. The 83 R, 83 S, and 93 S are all .610, but the 83 X is .630 and the 93 X is .655.
For players outside the middle of the bell curve, or those looking for heavier or lighter options, there are the Diamana RB and WB hybrid shafts. The RB comes in lighter weights, softer flexes, and is geared toward smoother swingers. Diamana WB comes in one heavy, X-flex configuration for the aggressive swinger. [See Price / Buy]
