Ryan Fox Wins 2025 RBC Canadian Open
Toronto, ON – Ryan Rox (-18) won the 2025 RBC Canadian Open over Sam Burns on the fourth playoff hole. It felt like neither guy wanted to win but eventually someone had to. After playing the par 5 finisher three times apiece, both guys were even par. Finally, both players had the ability to go for it in two and Fox hit a majestic 3 wood that sat finished ten feet from the cup. When Burns 3 putted for par after his three wood found the green, the victory was a mere formality.
Fox forced the playoff by making birdie on his 72nd hole, his fourth day in a row making 4 on the long par 5. The long hitting New Zealander recently broke through for his first victory on the PGA Tour at the Myrtle Beach Classic and quickly added a second to his resume with friends, family, and fans looking on in Canada.
Finishing one stroke behind Fox and Burns in solo third was Kevin Yu, with Cameron Young and Matt McCarty one back of him at -16. Ben An, Andrew Putnam, and “The Great” Matteo Manassero shared T6 at -15.
Others who had notable finishes included Shane Lowry, Ludvig Aberg, and defending champ and Canadian Nick Taylor (T13, -13); Luke Clanton narrowly missed the cut in his first start as a pro.
The golf course resulted in a bunched up leaderboard like few tournaments can. Beginning the day, there were 24 players within 4 shots of the lead. At one point during the final round, there were 11 players tied for the lead. The story should be very different at Oakmont next week where the winning score figures to be close to even par and one of the game’s elite few players is highly likely to hoist the trophy.
Rory McIlroy was always going to be one of the big stories heading into the week but the storylines surrounding him are a bit surprising. The big favorite this week, Rory missed the cut by twelve strokes and nearly finished dead last. Fans will be wondering if he can somehow recapture some of the form that led him to don the green jacket just a few weeks ago.
Other top contenders for the US Open include world number one Scottie Scheffler, defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, as well as Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele.
